If I buy a used scm, how do I know it will work on my car? Does the whole part number have to match?

Yes, the whole part number AND the 3-digit VCATS code on the label in the boot must be the same. If you get one with the right part number but the wrong VCATs code it will need to be reprogrammed by the dealer or a repair shop with the proper equipment.

If I install a remote starter does the lock and trunk features run through the existing scm? Just seeing if there is any way around replacing it since finding on eon ebay that matches exactly is probably not going to happen.

If the remote starter has a separate key fob then the existing remote function of the SCM probably does not matter.

Proceed with caution tihough, not all remote starters will work with Jags:
See for example: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...llation-70093/

Also make sure you know what you are doing or use an experienced installer: Here is an example of what a botched remote starter install can do: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...n-fixed-58086/ (You have to read about 3/4 into this long thread to find out it was a botched remote start install).

All connections should be soldered. Do not rely on those Skotchlock connectors you squeeze with pliers...they are notoriously unreliable.

Lastly if you opt for the SCM, try giving Jagbits, Terry's Jaguar or Coventry West a call for used parts.

i would never attempt to install a remote starter myself, i'm not knowledgeable enough to try it, especially on a car with such complicated wiring. i checked on jagbits and they wanted $450 for a used scm. i have a remote starter that i recently purchased and i think i'll have best buy install it. you've been extremely helpful and if i have any other questions i'll be sure to ask.
