Default Leak-down test 20-25%

Hey everyone. I just bought a 97 Xk8 w/75k miles. I had a leak-down test on it and the readings were 20-25%. Is this normal for the xk8? How long do you think that engine will last? Another 25k maybe?

I am about to spend $2,400 on tensioners + water pump + tstat etc. Should I just drive it until the tensioners give and do a rebuilt at that time?

Thank you,

Gene

NO! These engines are not rebuildable as far as I understand, and if they fail more then likely it will destroy the engine, fix those tensioners. If the compression is still good on it then it should go a long way if you maintain it. Standard procedure for our vintage of motor is to change these issues (tensioners, water pump, thermostat riser) to the updated/better parts and then loving maintain the car. By the way, you will LOVE driving the car once you get to really enjoy it, only problem I have with my 99 is the pain it causes in my cheeks, can't get rid of that grin..........

Also, if you readon here you'll find many cars in the mid 100,00's to even pushing 200,000. Some folks believe a healthy nikasil engine will actually outlast the steel sleeved engines
