Default The life of a garage queen

Bought an 01 XK8 with 42,000 miles on her back in September 2015. The 84 year old I bought it from, bought her back in 05 with 22,000 miles on her. Since it was a corporate executive vehicle before that, Carfax had it as a 1 owner. LOL! The Blue Sapphire/Ivory convertible has been sitting in a garage her entire life. All of the needed fixes had been done before I got her with the records from an Atlanta dealer. A lot of his receipts were what I'd consider the dealer takin him to the cleaners because they could. The ones that stuck out like a sore thumb was the 3 receipts for radiator flush and fill and a thermostat change. That was one thing I had to do when I got her. Replaced both cracked caps, flush and fill including a thermostat because the radiator fluid was rusty brown and sorta thick. Occasionally the low coolant light kept coming on which made me start looking at it. Oil was recently changed and clear. The tires which have about 60% tread, have flat spots, so I will be replacing the tires before summer. My favs are the Falcon PT722's. I need to find a shop that will redye the leather on the left side of the steering wheel and a little leak on the passenger window/rag top. The weather strip is obviously ca-ca in one little place. Otherwise, she seems well cared for. I plan to put a few miles on her this summer. I've already put over 2000. It is definitely a nice ride and will be much improved with new tires. USAA doesn't seem to like the ragtop. They are charging me more than anything else I've got for a max of 5000 miles per year on the Jag...

My insurance didn't like the ragtop either. I ended up insuring mine with a collector vehicle insurance company, like Grundy or Hagerty. They give you unlimited miles,(I live in mine during the summer) and just don't want you to take her to the store to buy lumber and cement blocks, or to work.(common sense) It has worked out for me, since I am retired. For a $12,000 agreed value, I am paying around $260 per year, living next door of what used to be the murder capital of the world. I am sure you will find even more to love on your new toy.......Mike

had no clue that Grundy or Hagerty type companies would consider the Jag since it is not that old... I also have a restored 98 Cobra sitting beside her in the garage... need a bigger garage... both are covered with low mileage at USAA. The Cobra is not really priced as though it is a garage queen either, although a lot less than the Jag.

Thanks!
Michael

Several of the collector car insurers charge for liability only once and then a minimal collision/comprehensive for each car. At one time I had 3 cars, including the '02 XK8 under Hagerty for a total of less than $600 per year all with declared values. Hagerty jacked up their rates for no reason other than they thought they could and I moved to Grundy. Waiting to see what will happen this year.

I've had Hagerty for 20 years. Never a claim. E mailed them when I bought the '99 XK8 to see if they would insure the Jag. Sure, they will do limited production or exotic vehicles. I think they meant neurotic vehicles though... Rich

Some states will not let you insure a car as antique until 35 years old, NC being one.
I have the TR6 and the '49 Roadster with Grundy, but even get a reduced premium on the Jag for little mileage. NC has no such plan.

I, too, was convinced that Hagerty didn't insure cars as new as my new 2000 XKR. That is, until I called to cancel the insurance on my Mark 9. They were glad to cover the XKR at a reasonable rate. I've been with Hagerty for 33 years now. At one time or another, they've insured all four of my Jags. On the one occasion that I needed a tow, they arranged for the best flat bed company in the area to do the job.

I thought I had called Hagerty once and they said that they wouldn't insure my car (2001 xk8) since my other car was not new enough - they said that my OTHER car had to be less than 2 or 3 years old (so I would be inclined to drive it more than my Jag)? Maybe I spoke to a newbie at Hagerty, I don't know... what has been your all experience?? Is that true or should I call back?

Blindside, none of my other cars are newer than 2006, but I don't recollect that Hagerty asked me about them when I insured the XKR a few months ago. Perhaps another call to them would be in order.

Grundy insured my 99 XK8, so long as I was using my 07 X Type as my daily driver. I imagine that if my 2nd car was a Ferrari, there may be some kind of further discussion. I hear Grundy is now insuring special everyday rides now. I should probably check......Good Luck......Mike
