Looking at buying a 1997 XK8 convertible BGR light interior & top..
OK, so it looks like the 1997 XK8's are getting close to the lowest prices they are likely to go to (and still be in decent shape).
I know I need the history on the secondary timing chain tension adjusters, water pump and thermostat housing.....any other major concerns?
I have read, in the early days of the top hydraulics giving "up the ghost" and wrecking the interior with hydraulic fluid......if this is the case what do I look for, in terms of upgrades/mods/service for this issue?
Also, what are, if any, potential rust areas to look for on a 17 year old XK8.
I'm OK with all things mechanical and light bodywork/painting, replacing soft tops and parts....not too hot on electrical/computer glitches....yet.
Thanks,
Rob.

The head gaskets are more likely to fail on the early models as opposed to 03 on, ditto transmission. There is a replacement valve for the transmission that ZF claims will extend the life of the A drum, the common failure. Overheating is the greatest danger, and use of the Realgauge by the jag wrangler or other such constant monitor with alarm would be wise.
Apparently, the hoses used in the 97 and early 98 are heavier than later models and failure is uncommon, but the top latch piston and main hydraulic cylinders could still leak due to age. If the fluid in the pump unit has been changed to the green Petosin leaking is not likely to damage the interior.
The electronic modules do not age well. Many abs modules have need a fairly simple solder repair and the ECM may at some point need to be repaired. There are services available for the modules and the cost is not prohibitive.
I know nothing about rust, West coast and southern cars are often like new, and that goes for suspension nuts and bolts especially.
If you are a competent mechanic and have a code reader and a place to work the older cars are a good value.
