MPG comparison 8 - R ???????

MPG comparison 8 - R ???????
I am currently running a 4.0l XK8 coupe, I use it regularly for my 40mile commute to work (twice a week at least) and am really playing with the idea of upgrading to an XKR.
My main concern is that the MPG may kill me, or stop me from using it as much as I would like.
If I drive mine gently and cruise at 70mph I can return 27-30 mpg easily.
If driven more sportingly (as usual) i return an average of 22 - 23 mpg.
Can anybody give me some figures for an XKR?
I really fancy a soft top with a supercharger
Thanks in advance
James

In fact on a motorway run I can easily better your figures. Around 33-35mpg with cruise.
Though it is easy to drop it down to 15-20mpg, forget the money occasionally - it is such fun!
Though strangely, for an older technology car, I can get 35-40mpg out of my XJS

Thanks All,
RJAG you say you have both, dare I ask which is your favorite?
It looks like I'm on the prowl for a 4.2 XKR, I dont mind being as low as single figures for "fun" driving, but for the daily cruise to work mid teens would become a very expensive luxury. It sounds like this is a win win for me

The leanest run I ever did in my XKR 4.2 was 7.8L/100km average, from Zurich to Vaduz. This stretch includes mostly 100km/h roads, with a few 80km/h and 120km/h parts.
I average 10.5L/100km when I don't reset the meter for a few weeks. Not too much traffic around here though, so I'd consider it to be mostly countryside driving, with occasional trips for shopping or the gym.

I have a 4.2 XJ8 and a 4.2 XKR , I drive both to work about 50 miles per day in a 50-50 combination of freeway and town driving. The XJ8 will average 26-28 MPG where the XKR will average 20-22 MPG. Both cars weigh about the same although the XKR is more aerodynamic. It's funny, but the higher compression XJ8 is just as exciting to drive as the XKR as it will accelerate just as quickly around town. The XKR is only good where there is open road with some space to run it into the red zone.

I had an 01 XK8 and now have an 03 XKR, both convertibles. I get the same average mileage 22.5 MPG with my XKR as I did with my XK8 in combo driving. The XKR gives about 29-30 MPG on the highway at around 75-80 MPH. The mileage is based on two people in the car, about 400 lbs, and some luggage. I drive moderately, but know if I need the extra 100 horses they are there. You should go for the XKR vert, it will give you an even bigger smile while driving, especially with the top down and the supercharger humming.

I had a '98-8 and upgraded to an '05-R and I was very pleasantly surprised that the mileage of the R was significantly better than the XK8. I don't remember the numbers exactly, but it was noticeable.
The only difference is with the R your foot will be in the radiator more But even with that I still get better mileage.

Hello, I am not a fast driver or probably not even considered a spirited driver, mostly drive in town as I get 14.2 to 15 MPG.
I know in town it is stop and start every ¼ to ½ mile so not very good M.P.G..
I just had a new MAP sensor put in and was hoping my MPG would go up a bit but no, It still reads 14.2 car computer.
I always wonder how correct the car's MPG computer is!
Is this MPG worse than most?
2001 XKR 4.0L
My car is in good well maintained condition, new spark plugs, BK44 cleaned throttle body, use BK gas additive every 2 or 3 tanks. Anything I can do to help MPG's.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks
I realize in town driving is my worst culprit for MPG's.
Happy Motoring..

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area without traffic jams and hardly any crossings with red lights, which is why my average is about 22-23 MPG. We run our BMW 123d with 204 hp and 1484kg (3272 lb) with an average of 42 MPG.
Sometimes I reset the meters when being in a larger city with traffic jams, trams and an annoyingly large amount of traffic lights - then the Jag shows numbers more like yours, while the BMW (with automatic start/stop function) manages about 30 MPG.
Perhaps an auto start/stop function is a plausible modification? Or does one need a more sturdy start engine and/or other equipment for such a mod?

I do because that way the cruise control reads km/hr so I can set it to the speed limits.
Also using L/100 km is unambiguous whereas, as Norri said, US + UK mpg are different.
Just done a fairly long run along country lanes for the first time after changing the plugs at 89K miles. It has gone from 12.5 L/100 to 10.6 !!
That's 22 US, 26.7 UK

Hi everybody,
I drove a 2007 xkr today. It's a wonderfull car, but I've been a bit scared by what the computer gave me: 23l/100 for a 15mn drive in town (while the official figures are around 17.5l/100km).
So I'm happy to read that some of you get around 8l/100km on the motorway (so just a bit less than the official figures).
Thanks!
