Default Mysterious shut down

Driving on the highway at 120 kph and the car started to cough. Warning message regarding ASC not available (not sure if that is correct but close). Then message said failsafe mode. Pulled over and the car stalled. Waited a few minutes and started and everything was fine except for the check engine icon which disappeared after a more protracted wait with engine off. Happened one year ago with no other issues except this time. Have an appointment with the local dealer but hope for some cheaper options. Thanks.

jagortho, year would help a ton here. There are several potential causes. Have you tried to read the computer's stored codes?

BTW, I'd put your MY in your sig line, so nobody else asks in later threads you participate in.

Thank you for your reply. 2002 xkr with 51k miles. Have not read the stored codes and not sure where to go to have them read. I'm not sure what you mean by MY in the sig line. New to the forums and still learning the protocols. Thanks again.

I agree get the codes first. Not sure about Canada but most AutoZones, Local Garages and a few auto parts stores can help. Is this car a daily driver or has it been sitting?

sorry jagortho, apologies... MY = model year. We do tend to throw acronyms out alot on these forums. We are, however, working on a sticky thread with most commonly used terminology and these acronyms.

My 97 xk8 started this crap, similar symptoms off and on over the last year. It flashed codes on the Odometer rear out. Took it to the shop couple weeks ago, they got no codes on computer, nothing there. So they went throught the OBSII (?) port and found the codes that lead to the TB being wacked.

Jaguar had a throttle body recall TSB for the XJ8 & XK8 years 1997 to 1999 (expired 2009)you need to see if that has taken place. Keep in mind reconditioned TB are available. It also has another TSB for the connectors to the TB. That covers XJ8 & XK8 for the years 1999 to 2001, now who is to say if you were outside that time frame that it could not be your problem. I would be looking into both areas to see if they apply. If you are outside that time period I would check the connections and cleaning them.

It looks like I have a little investigation to do. I will look into getting the codes and seeing if there is any info there. It is so rare and random. Hopefully cleaning the TB will clear it up.

Thanks.

Sorry for not replying to your query about the use. I store it from end of October to end of April. Have had it for 3 years and put about 10,000 miles on it. So even when it is on the road, it is not a daily drive.
