Default Nav to 3Gauge conversion done

Hi Gent's and Ladies,

I share this again as a new thread, if it helps someone that thinks about doing this I be happy.

I replaced my old crap Nav to 3Gauge, the instructions from Steve ie TheJagWrangler where great I just got a bit confused when it came to open up the main connectors for the main dash board ie "pry off the hood retainer gently with a pair of pliers."

see me pic's below, it also shows how these "hoods" are made and how to open them and also some pic's of the wiring that might be useful.

0) this is how the old nav looked like

1) this is what You need

center wood piece, 3gauge instrument, wiring, instructions + patience

2) remove lower, main and center dash board covers

3) hood retainer - this is how You dismantle it !

4) wiring

5) 3gauge mounted

6) final result

Thanks for posting Salo. It looks really great!

Even though I managed to upgrade the nav. in 2010 with the no longer available Garmin GVN-53 (there is a link in my signature), I am planning to do the 3-gauge conversion also on my own car. I just think the aesthetics suits the car better. It is very much a matter of personal opinion.

I have a smartphone now if I need to navigate.

Also, regarding the connector disassembly, you are right that the plastic retainers can slide off and there really is no need for pliers (though that method works also). I need to update those old instructions.
