Default Navigation system problems

i recently purchased a used 2004 XK8 with 50,000 miles. it is complete with a nav system. There was no disc in the unit when i bought it so the screen said to "insert disc'. i called the local Jag dealer and the parts man suggested i contact NaVTEQ to purchase the latest disc for my car.

i went on line and purchased the latest disc at $200.00. when it arrived, i followed the installation instructions in the factory nav handbook, but alli got was the clock face then an error message to check the disc. i have reinstalled the disc, checked all the fuses, and eventried a dvd cleaning disc buti still cannot get the nav system or even the clock to work.

any ideas what is wrong with the system or could it be operator error????

I had a little scare when I first received my new disc from the dealer also. I didn't let them get away with selling me the car without the disc.

Anyway, when it arrived a couple weeks later, I installed it just as instructed. It took quite awhile for the system to 'load', and I too thought it was defective. It wouldn't work until I shut the vehicle off. No clock or anything. The next time i started my car, it took a few minutes, then the clock showed up. Pressing in the thumbstick, and NAV was up an running. Let us know if you get it to work, ok?

JAG DEALERSHIP.. not really common.. only some dealers have it... most don't even know about it.. it basically updates any problem that may be present in the nav system... i would find a jag DVD from jag and navTEK.. and try that option first.

Wow, this is getting wild!!! I contacted Jaguar dlr about the ghost disc thing. the svc dept says they have diagnostic disc for trouble shooting if necessary at 1 hour labor rate of $105.00. they seem to think i had a bad disc from NAVTEQ.

Icalled NAVTEQ cust. svc. and told the lady my story. she informs me they dont sell discs for the XK8 since it has an Alpine unit. All they sell is the DENSO disc. NO WONDER MY NAV DOESN"T WORK!!! the lady didnt tell me that when I ordered the disc from them. She agreed for me to return the X-Type, DENSOdisc they sold me.

Then i called Jaguar to see about buying an ALPINE disc for my XK8. They refered me back to NAVTEQ. Told him cant get the XK8 disc from them and he checked their warehouse and saidtheir disc costs $675.00. He's not sure how recent the info is on their disc. This is the same part number they've used for the past 2 or 3 years. He called the warehouse twice for specifics but no one ever called him back.

I then called Alpine USA......they don't sell those disc. SoI called DiSCUSA, formerly Distronics, the mfg. of the disc, but they havent called me back.

I checked on Ebay and found several Alpine discs for my XK8 dated 2002 for $159.00. however, i live in the fast growing Atlanta area and 6 year old map info is so obsolete.

So far i am unable to determine if a newer version is available. If it will cost $675.00, i'll just buy a hand held Garmon or Tom-Tom for $299.00 and Velcro it to the Nav screen on the dash. Then i can use it as needed on my Harleys or my truck.

so the saga continues......thanks again for the assiastance. Please let me know if you guys have any more good ideas. thanks.

Keep watching EBay, as I have seen later versions of the dvd there.

On '04 the Jaguar P/N is 4W83-10E898-GA , Alpine P/N is BM9JG91F

I know of some people who have successfully copied the DVD.

Navigation System problem solved. I went o E-Bay and ourchased an OEM 2002 Nav.disc for the Alpine unit and it works perfectly. Apparrently i was not using the proper disc. I dtill would like to get a newer version since lots of things have chanced in my area since 2002. I will continue to look on E-bay for the updated disc. Thanks for all the input and assistance.

Harry, you're the official tester then. If you find a newer DVD above the '04 edition that went out, please let us know. In my researching of the NAVTEQ website, it doesn't appear that a new DVD was ever developed for the XK nav system that we have. I'm feeling like we'll be stuck in 2003 maps for quite awhile. I hope i'm wrong though. <cross fingers>

My car audio shop claims they can do it. I think he said he can get two auxilliary video inputs into the nav screen with an aftermarket part (PAC I believe). But think about it, you can get the video there, but what about audio? A whole other issue to tackle.

Absolute, the 2003 has a clock startup. It's really not that bad, seriously.

They can put back up cameras etc into the nav screen too. Pretty cool stuff.

i am having the same problem finding the Alpine BM9JG91F for my 06 XKR. Nobody seems to make it or have it...except for the random $300 on ebay which is ridiculous. anybody know how to copy one for $100?

Default Free - I just bought an 02 XK8 with the disk

I have the 02 or later disk in my new 2002 XK8, it is a copy. I have only had the car for 2 days, and I got it to load correctly once. Give me your address and I will copy it and mail it free.

Default nav. discs

I have a 2002 XKR with the nav disc, and I'm sure I can get one of my sons to burn me a copy or two should someone need one. Frankly, the nav system in the XKR is so cumbersome and so outdated (even for 2002), that I don't use it much. It is interesting that I have a 2008 Buick Enclave whose nav. disc doesn't have as many streets or locations as my 2004 Chrysler Pacifica which has more info than both the Enclave and the XKR. You would think that they all use the same databases for their information, and that newer models would have updates. The cost of the updated discs for any of these systems is ridiculous.
