Default Need Help - Gaskets and O-rings

At this time my 99 XK8 has not been running. I thought it was the fuel pump and had purchased that item based on other threads here - thank you for this forums. Now, car is at shop and turns out I have fuel pressure and car was still not starting. Mechanic then took off the covers and removed the coil packs. All cylinders were full of oil... meaning my o-rings or gaskets or both are bad leaking oil down into the spark plug holes. He has cleaned them out and replaced the spark plugs and tried to start again and said it was close but still not starting. Maybe was flooded and he says that they are a pain to get clear if flooded. That was yesterday....today still no start. He just called and now going to pull everything to get to timing chain to see if possibly if it jumped time. For that I need to find gaskets and orings or a kit to replace everything for the valve covers on both sides.

Does anyone know of a KIT that would include ALL my gaskets and o-rings? If not... need help to know what to buy for this. My mechanic gets parts from 1 person and they are very expensive so i at least try to save money where i can.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe your car has the AJ27 engine and can use the fel-pro gasket set provided for the Lincoln LS1: VS 50724 R, which I think you can buy at Autozone, NAPA, etc. If the spark plug seals are single O rings, that is the correct set. The earlier AJ26 engine has plug seals in a figure 8 configuration.
The starting problem is likely due to cylinder wash, as I believe you have nikasil liners. Do a search for cylinder wash or nikasil. The remedy is to pull the plugs, add about 1 tsp. oil to each cylinder, then crank the engine with the throttle floored to shut off the fuel and distribute the oil. Replace plugs and it should start.

Thanks RJ237 for the quick and good info. My Mechanic knows about the cylinder wash and quoted your words on how to fix that. He is doing that now and hope that solves this issue. I went ahead and ordered that set also of gaskets and orings from ROCKAUTO (43.27 shipped) so thanks again for that. His cost was going to set me back around $125. I will post updates soon.

Getting a lot of grief from everyone about my Jag nickle and diming me to death. But love my car and just will not give it up.. no matter the cost right now! And i do say "Right Now" ..

Thanks to the best car forum on the NET!!!

The cylinder wash was the issue of not firing. As soon as we put a little oil down each cylinder then replaced new plugs it fired right off. With some smoke i may add. Now just have to wait on the gaskets to get here Wednesday and install and i will be back on the road. Thanks again for the help!

excellent news! I was going to recommend rock auto, they are great. Hopefully this will be the last of any trouble. I find the 4 liter v8 to be very reliable.

Update:

After 2 sets of the gaskets Lincoln LS1: VS 50724 R, my shop had to order valve cover gaskets from jag. The reason... those that i purchased from Rock Auto was too thin. When he tightened the bolt down on the covers it would not seat. He told me that those bolts had shafts in the middle that would make sure the covers would only go down so far. I would assume to keep from pinching the gaskets. Lesson learned.

I am back on the road now and i hope that problem is behind me. I hope also my issue of "marking" my territory in every driveway is over also. But, when i drove it home it threw a code. I had the following codes:

P1384
P0300
P1316
P1000

Now i am used to getting the bottom 3 ever so often. The new code P1384 is what is troubling me. I reset the codes and drove on. But they came back. Twice. So, now i have to determine the issue I have with P1384 - Variable Valve Timing Solenoid A Circuit

Anyone one give a hint on what to look for or check with this code?

Mike,

The P1000 isnothing to worry about. it just means the OnBoard tests haven't been completed since the last memory clear and it will (eventually) be replaced with P1111 when the tests are complete.

P1316
(Misfire excess emission) is associated with P0300 which tells you it's random
and not a specific cylinder. Not very informative!

P1384
:
VVT solenoid malfunction – A bank

Possible Causes:
1. VVT solenoid valve to ECM PWM drive circuit fault
2. VVT solenoid valve to ECM ground circuit fault
3. VVT solenoid failure
4. VVT oil flow fault
5. VVT / camshaft mechanical failure

Given the recent work, harness connections would be the first thing to eliminate.

Graham

Mike I have a 99 xk8. I returned my car back to the garage 3 times, because the valve cover kept leaking, it was because the gasket was too thin. We finally got them from jaguar dealer(they were thicker) Later on I got codes p0300 and p1316, but only one time, and they have not returned(maybe just a fluke?) Best of luck with p1384. Let us know what happens

For future readers, the Fel-Pro is listed for the Lincoln LS 3.9L however:

2001 JAGUAR XJR Valve Cover Gasket

Victor Reinz set is listed for both the Jaguar 4.0L and the Lincoln 3.9L

It is $17 more.
