Default New Battery Didn't Help

I got a new battery which when fully charged stopped the Poor Performance warning. However; something is draining the battery and after a week of not starting the car or driving it when I start it I get the warning again. Any ideas on what could be draining the battery? 1997 XK8.

First check that there is not a light on as that is the most common issue.

Are you leaving the key in the ignition? That keeps the security control module powered. Likewise, if the key slot cover does not close over the key slot with the key removed that has the same affect.

Beyond that pulling the negative battery cable and measuring current drain is next. More than 30ma after 30 minutes then you have to start pulling fuses to locate the offending circuit. Remember to take the bulb out of the trunk light when you start on that fuse box. Negative or positive doesn't matter. Just that the negative is easier to get to.

When I had that problem with my 97 it turned out to be the power amp for the stereo wasn't powering off like its supposed to and was draining the battery. An easy way to check is to pull the fuse for it in the trunk and see if the battery is still draining.

also look at the power antenna if it doesn't go down completely it will draw power trying to pull the antenna down the rest of the way even if everything is turned off .

John,

You've posted this question in XK8/XKR tech forum but your profile shows you have a 1996 XJ6. Exactly which vehicle are you troubleshooting?

Here is the chart for a '00 XK8/R which is, with minor exceptions, the same for the entire '96 - '06 run.

Can't help with the XJ6.
