Default New owner with some questions - 97 XK8

Folks,

I just picked up a 97 XK8 with some issues and was hoping you guys could help.

It has engine problems that I have to spend some time diagnosing. I just got it home last night so I don't have much to add on it right now. Vehicle runs, but idles rough and there is something smoking/burning under the hood. I haven't gotten to visually inspect where that smoke is coming from.

Aside from that, some of my issues are:
  1. I don't know if I am just a moron when it comes to the parking brake, but last night I was dealing with this
<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf" flashvars="file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid131.photobucket.co m%2Falbums%2Fp309%2Fdrinkdontdrive%2F82b66665.mp4" >

Is there an issue with the handle or am I missing something?

2. Can anyone tell me what this missing part is called?

Is there a used classifieds section on here where I may locate this part?

I am sure I will have plenty more questions once I get to tear into this thing, but these were just some quick things I noticed.

I appreciate your time and help . Kindest regards,
Jonny

Welcome to the forum!

From the brake handle pic I couldn't determine what the question was. Usual question is how to release the brake. Pull up while depressing button and hold while lowering handle.

The manual top closing hand hold appears to have the stitched in cloth 'pocket' torn out. There is no trim piece that goes there. Yes, Jaguar could have done that better.

[edit] Reread the post and figured out it is a video not a picture. Appears the ratchet lock on the brake handle is missing a spring.

Welcome Jonny,

That handbrake doesn't look as if it's attached to anything. It should drop back to the floor after it's engaged but there doesn't appear to be any resistance when you lift it?

Cable should go rearwards underneath the vehicle to a ' Y ' shaped splitter near the back of the propeller shaft. From there a cable goes to each rear brake.

Thank you gentlemen for your responses - they are much appreciated.

Do you know of a way to release the parking brake for now so I can move it? Is there a fail-safe release I can use?

Also, by chance would anyone have a picture that may capture the "pocket" I am missing. I have never seen the inside of one of these cars so it's all new to me.

I also just remembered that both my tail lights have cracks in. Not bad, but bad enough that I will probably replace. Anything I need to know on replacements? Thanks again guys, I truly appreciate your time to help a newb

Brake is stuck ON? I assumed when you'd moved the vehicle yesterday you meant you had no parking brake. Check it's not fully engaged by pulling it right up and pressing the release button in the way Test Point outlined above.

If the mechanism is stuck, you can release the tension on the cable at the ' Y ' splitter thread and locknut.

Graham,

The gentleman I purchased it from helped me load the vehicle onto the transporter - because of the engine problems I didn't test-drive it. I don't know if the issue was there at that point - but currently the parking brake is engaged so the car does not want to move. I appreciate your help with the locknut and will use this to release the parking brake.

You guys are a wonderful help -thank you

My top "hole" looked like that when I got mine, too. I took a door edge guard strip, cut 4 pieces to fit, pushed them over the edges, and voila...no more ugly hole.

Thank you for your response. By chance do you have a picture of this by chance?

Or does anyone have a picture of what it should look like?

Thanks,
Jonny

Just a little update. Last night when I got home I tried the parking brake, and lo and behold with a little muscle I got it up high enough to get tension and then release. I think at this point it is in bad need of an adjustment. I found a How to guide on here so I will check that out.

Thank you again for your help guys,
Jonny
