Default no communication

I get a no communication signal when I hook up a scanner/reader. It also tells me to make sure the key is on (even when the key is on or car is running). I have used different brands with the same result. What might cause a no communication situation? Bad Plug/pin connection upon ECM reinstall?
Car runs fine and has no engine codes displayed.

(Note: Air control valve was replaced and ECM rebuilt before I bought it.)

Do you have a wiring diagram for the car?
If so, first thing to check is power to the DLC.

Autozone's scanner didn't work on mine, same error.

AutoEnginuity's scanner-to-laptop works perfectly.

I have basic tools at the house and no tech manual for the car.
I'm gonna be out of service for a couple of days, so Ileft itwith a friend and he's gonna check the wiring, chase electrical, and see if he can get it to communicate.
I'll update all, when I'm up and running again.

Thanks.

I'm back.

Update:
All campaigns (for 97starting problems)checked out O.K.
Checked all parts the campaigns said to check.
Forced problems and still did not throw any codes/lights.

Gonna talk to a dealer aboutECM reflashwith ECM in car. (TSB 1102)

(Couple hour process where they put a charger on the battery to keep car in proper voltage range while reflash of ECM is in progress)

(From what I understand, it's like putting windows on your computer after you replace your hard drive)

Any of this make sense. If so, how much will I be paying?

It was actually a recall so if it wasnt done already it will be free.
It is possible though because you have a 97 your ECM could be bad. You can get it rebuilt. Let us know what happens.

Have paperwork from dealer (non-jag) that said ECM repaired in Nov 07.

Any ECM repair guy around San Antonio, Tx.?
It might have been bad repair job.
Repair was done to ECM out of veh.

Question: 97 XK8 ECM is CAN plus but what program? I heard there are 14 variations for CAN plus that year. (VIN VC003032)

Your car has CAN network as well as SCP network. If your local dealer sent out ECM to be repaired in Nov 07 I would take it to them and tell them to make it right for free. Theyused a sublet repair place, they need to stand behind it.

I bought the car from ahigh volume car dealer (more like used car lot)outside houston. No warranty. As is.

That's probably why the cars are priced so low. Buyer beware.

I'll let you know this week what local Jag dealer comes up with.
If they say bad ECM, then I'll try to get a hold of the sublet shop that the Houston dealer used and see if they will make it good.

I need to figure out the "no communication" problem first before I go on to possible cylinder wash.

Note: I am begining to be quite knowledgable on 97's.

Dealer finally looked at it.

They said no communication problem, their genrad ? scanner found about a half dozen codes.
I'm gonna get it back Monday morning.
They printed a list of the codes for me and I told them to clear them out so that I can see if any fresh codes will appear.
Dealer seems to think it is an ECU problem, but ECU was just rebuilt (maybe bad rebuild job ?)

Dealer just called and said codes cleared and no new codes appeared. He said drive it a while and bring it back for a check up.

*** possible that codes were not cleared by former owner after ECM rebuild.

Default no communication problem after all

Car starts better. Will continue to evaluate before going further. Thanks for everyones input. (Hats off to FJT, again)

Dealer cleared codes:
p0340 p1336 p1797
p0430 p1235 u2012
p0420 p1798

I guess they didn't clear them after ECM rebuild.
