Here's what I'd try if I had (1) old and (1) new DVD.

Put the old DVD in a Windows computer and look at the contents using File Manager. Look for a data folder and see what type of files are in it, i.e., what are the last 3 letters of the file extensions. These would probably be the map files.

Take the old DVD out and put in the new one and do the same thing. Hopefully the files in the data folder will have the same extension. If so, make a copy of the old DVD but replace the files in the data folder with the ones from the data folder in the new DVD.

If anyone wants to send me an old DVD and a new DVD, i'd be glad to try it and see if it works.

This might work if the extensions are the same!

latest lead I have from my local dealer is that Volvo used a similar system at some point and their discs may be compatible. Nothing else tho as I don't know any volvo owners... :S

Default 2003 xk8 navigation system

I have a 2003 xk8 with the in dash navigation, I use it frequently, and unless the street or area is completely new, I have no problem with the system. I do wish there was a new update. That said I also have a Magellan system that is several years old. The update for it is more than I paid for the unit. But it also gets me where I want to go whether I am in the west or the east coast. The only place it refused to work was in Guam.

Ditto here in Los Angeles--the 'old' DVD seems to work fine. Of course there are the odd times when the nav system will show me that I am somewhere miles away from where I really am. This has only happened a couple of times and is probably not unique to Jaguar but, rather, the GPS signal.

I don't like the in-dash nav system for multiple reasons, outdated maps is just one of them. It also lacks a touch-screen, and it won't let my wife enter an address while moving. How ridiculous is that? I understand that they think they are keeping me safe by preventing me from entering an address while moving, but even if my wife is in the car with me, I still have to pull to the side of the road and come to a complete stop to enter an address.

The portable gps devices such as Garmin, and even the various Smart Phones have great navigating capability. I just came into the 21st Century and finally bought an HTC phone from Verizon and the navigating capabilities alone were worth the price. If I just speak a destination, like a Starbuck's or a particular restaurant, the device recognizes it and starts dictating the route. Given the state-of-the-art these days, I would hardly consider paying anything extra for a new car just to have a nav system in the car (hard to believe that these were $2,000+ premiums just a few years ago). Of course they now package this as a 'tech package' where everything (climate control, radio/ipod, nav goes through the touchscreen).

My Droid navigation has been dead on every time and the neat thing about it is that I do not need to pay for updates. I do think a sweet British voice would be a nice option.

I like using my 'droid and the T605. Press a button, say "open google search", say something like "Navigate to cold beer" and it pops up a list of appropriate selections then gives me the directions to my choice, interrupting whatever happens to be playing over the speakers to give me directions. How much cooler is that than whatever Navteq has to offer?

Gus,
Did you ever come up with an update to the Alpine nav system. I have a 2006 xkr and the nav disk is 2004. I have tried using the tools from this forum to create a backup of the disk without success. It would be great to have an updated nav disk and use this one as a back up.

Many thanks for JagRepair.com.

Can you sync your iPhone to the navigation system as mentioned by "beav" above?
There is a phone headset type button on my system, can that be used in some way to run the cell phone app through the sound system? I think that's what the above post is suggesting?
I have a 2005 xk8 with a navigation system.

Not without added equipment. Beav had a Motorola T605 installed, which is a phone and streaming audio Bluetooth interface.

That was a short lived install. I later changed the head unit to a JVC with av inputs, allowing me to use a MHL link from my Galaxy.

Default Garmin works

I just removed everything in the dash and epoxied in a Garmin 1490 LMT, put a single pole/single throw pushbutton into the rubber ducky toggle control so I can turn it on and off and remounted all the controls from the old unit so it still looks stock. I can find my way home again! Actually hardly ever use it though the wife feels the need to turn it on to monitor my speed. I got by the last 5+ decades without a GPS.

I've changed Siri on my iPhone to a British accent! Not quite the same, but it helps.

Personally, I just use google maps on my phone for navigation. I get it through the speakers with a tape player adapter for my XKR. I know it's not the highest quality audio, but its sufficient for me. They actually now make a tape adapter with built in Bluetooth.. thinking of giving it a try:

http://www.ionaudio.com/products/det...pter-bluetooth

When you have cars of different eras, its too much of a hassle to try and keep them up to date. My phone has all my contacts, address, etc- and it works in every car! And when new technology rolls around every few months, I only need to update one easy thing.

Also cheaper.. google maps is obviously free, and the tape adapter is about $15.

Just my 2 cents...
