Default Noise on cold startup, near throttle body

New to a 97 XK8 Coupe. When I start the car for the first time in the morning (with a cooler temp outside) I hear a chattering noise coming from near the throttle body. If I hold this piece with my hand, I can feel the pulsation of the sound. After a few minutes the noise goes away. The noise seems to be RPM dependent.

Anyone have insight into this?

My personal mechanic and Jaguar dealer said not to worry about it, but I would like to know what the noise is.

Is there some engine schematic online I could see so I could figure out what this part is? If it helps, I could post a video with the sound and location of the sound.

Thanks!

Please post a video with sound if you can. I'm wondering if it is similar to a sound I sometimes hear from mine when cold...

Hey Prowler, welcome to the forums.

There's a FAQ thread we've 'stickied' that contains alot of good information for new owners...what to look out for, ect. Go here first, and read some of the threads on tensioners, secondary ones to be specific. A good read for you right now.

Then, do a search of the XK8 and XJ8-XJR forums for 'tensioners' for more. Good luck.

Thanks for the information about the FAQ section- some really great info!

Here is a link to the video.

The noise seems to be coming from underneath the throttle, under that plastic intake piping, there's some sort of part... not sure what that is (but if I hold it I can feel a pulsating only when the noise is present)

The noise is coming from near the firewall and to me sounds like a water pump/ steering pump (with low fluid) type noise. The waterpump was recently replaced and the power steering has plenty of fluid.

Any ideas?

Try isolating the sound, use a length of heater hose and touch one end to each part and the other end near your ear. If you can see the part look in the parts listing for an identification. The parts listing is in the sticky section.

Good luck

It seems as though the noise is coming from underneath the intake ducting to the throttle body. So, Im guessing the noise is coming from the throttle body itself.

Any ideas? The noise goes away after you drive the car for about 5 minutes or less.

Thanks
