Default Not enough oil in ZF service kit...

Time to be nice to the XKR 2004 6 speed gear box.
ZF service kit with new filter pan, Torx 40 screws, 7 litres tranny oil and a seal for the electrical connector ordered.
Oil and filter pan off, no problem.
Then I forgot all about this project due to , lets say other bigger projects/problems.
Came back to the car after 14 days and there was a lot of transmission oil on the garage floor.

Now everything new is installed and I have done everything as described here in this forum ( going through the gears, temp measurement ) but at 40C there is ( after 7L transmission oil infused ) still no overflow of transmission oil.
So I guess I will have to get some more oil and get the car back on the lift.

Question:
Should I just fire up the engine until the filter pan temperature reaches 40C then remove the filler plug and fill the gear box with more transmission oil until overflow occurs?

Cheers
Carsten

I think you have the ZF6HP26 transmission in your car and it takes a total of 10.53 quarts including the cooler.

So if thats the case then the good news is that you have drained more of the old fluid out than most people get. The "bad" news is you really do need more fluid/oil.

Have a look at Checking & Filling the Fluid in the ZF 6 speed ZF6HP26 Transmission

Maybe with time, then entire torque converter drained out. This is good, as it means you will replace virtually the entire fill of fluid. Probably allows you not to do this again for a long time.

Keep the fill plug in when then engine is off. You can remove it as long as the engine is running.

I had this same problem. The transmission had time to let loose of the fluid that was lingering on the components and it also had an opportunity to drain a little from the fluid cooler on front. Let the car cool down then start the filling process. Be sure the temp is correct and fill as directed put the plug back in and drive it for a day or two then check the level again. Keep in mind that air pockets can fool you on the proper level.

+1 on the above.

When I did a complete flush on mine I did not realise that the idle had to be 750 rpm.

I did however drive for a few miles and re-checked the level at 40 degrees C and found I needed a "top up".

Thanks
I will let you know how much more oil it will accept when I get this done.

All in all it took 7,9L.
So if you are a bit slow like me and leaves the gear box to drain for a fortnight you will need to add 1L of gear box oil to the service set.

Congrats, you may now hold the world record for total volume of ATF drained from a ZF 6HP26 unit....

Could be, an overnight drain seems to make quite a difference but a fortnight is probably overkill.
