Not so automatic headlights

The auto headlights on my '04 work fine at dusk, but they refuse to come on when it's really dark. Anyone know what's up with that?

That's a weird one - the usual complaint is either they don't come on before it's too dark or don't come on at all.

As yours do work, it suggests nothing wrong with wiring or control stalk leaving a faulty sensor in the rearwiew mirror as the next possibility to investigate.
