Default O2 Sensor -- P1646 which one is it?

Hi and Greetings from Germany :-)

My OBD II shows an error code P1646 BANK 1

I understand it is one of the upstream O2 sensors, however I don't know if it is the one on the drivers or the one on the passengers side?

Does anyone know?

AH

it is the upstream one up behind the right rear (passenger) of the motor before the first cat over there. Easy repair if you want to do it on your own. Go by a set of O2 sensor removing socket set, mine came in a 3 set and go for it. If your motor is free of rust it will come right out. Mine did , was easy on my drivers side. Little tricky to get the socket on but easy. Be careful when unplugging it from the harness, don't tug on the wires on the plug end. I did and pulled out the brown wire. Got it back in, but time to time it loses contact and I have to go out and jam it back in the rubber grommet in the plug holding it in.

Just replaced the O2 sensor and erased the error code from the system ... however, after driving for about 20 minutes and restarting the car -- the engine light is on again w/same error code. Strange ... I definitely replaced the correct O2 sensor. Don't know what to do anymore.

silly question but did you plug it back in? Did you check to make sure none of the wires on the plug did not get pulled out. Assuming you got the correct O2 sensor. Think it has blue white and black wires on it.

The error code has reset after 2 'trips' because the cause has not been rectified.

The possible causes of P1646 are:

1. HO2S heater failure
2. HO2S sensing circuit short circuit to ground or high voltage
3. HO2S sensing circuit open circuit
4. ECM failure

As you have replaced the HO2S, you can eliminate (1) and as the car starts and runs, you can eliminate (4).

Check the connector and harness.
