obd2 code reader for abs
97 XK8 coupe located in Canada
I tried a couple of obd2 readers to get the codes for my abs fault, but they didn't seem to have that function. Anyone have a recommendation for a reader that deals with abs? Reasonably priced of course

As you are finding out, OBD2 readers will only give you "standard" codes that most modern cars are supposed to offer. It is mostly emissions-related. Confusingly, these OBD2 readers are generally capable of reading this OBD2 software protocol over a number of standard hardware buses (think CAN, SCP, ISO-9141). The limitation is really in software.
For modules/codes outside of OBD2, you need a code reader with the understanding of Jaguar/Land Rover codes. They are typically more $, but not bank-breaking any more. I have a used Foxwell 510 model bought locally. This model allows software updates to support additional brands (for a fee) over time. Others have mentioned a couple of models by iCarSoft. Check eBay/Amazon for specifics. Be prepared to see readers advertising the outside envelope of everything they support over all the JLR vehicles since inception. It is much harder to know what is actually supported on YOUR car.
Unfortunately, the commitment of these code reader manufacturers will likely only extend to the later cars. You might have only partial coverage on a '97. The airbag comes to mind as likely to be unsupported (the '97 airbag module is wired funky). OTOH, the cost of such a reader is likely less than a couple of hours of shop diagnostics anyway, so getting to the bottom of this ABS issue with your own reader might pay for itself. As usual, check the return policy in case support for a '97 is really poor.
If you want to go "all out", you can look into IDS/SDD running on a laptop, with that USB cable. This is a larger discussion.
Best of luck, keep us posted.
