Moving from semi to fully synth around 7yrs ago I noticed a definite improvement in MPG and economy. Along with a few other mods I got my old XK up to 39MPG (appreciating that the UK gallon is 15% larger than the US so it would be 33MPG stateside) on a long constant run.

The best I've found is Royal Purple 5w30 but now use quantum longlife 3 (just because my Audi takes it too). Because my car runs 99% on natural gas there are no carbon deposits in the oil so it still looks new at 10k miles

I was told to ensure my engine was thoroughly clean before transferring so treated it to a double dose of auto-rx back in 2009 before doing the transfer. My local shop asked me if I'd had a new engine dropped in their immediately after the treatment...it was just so clean!

More important than the oil you choose is the oil filter. If you don't go for an OE Jaguar filter, make sure the aftermarket alternative has a non return valve. This is essential to ensure rapid pressure build up on starting.

Real wars where people die have been started over lesser debates. Beware.

Make sure that the oil type and viscosity agree with the owner's manual. If you want to lavish fancier stuff on the car, it might make you feel better but the car couldn't car less.

Be sure to lube the 4 universal joints on the rear halfshaft assembly. They are often forgotten and go dry.

also enjoyed learning the feelings about oil. the war... my last post was about the brake light switch and had many many replys, but must admit was fun and educational.

My experience with any 4 cam is that the oil takes a beating with the various moving parts. Internal engine temperatures play havoc with these complicated power plants. I started using synthetic in the late 80's. Using ever since in everything I own. What convinced me is a five degree temperature drop in my first 3.4 Quad cam as well as an improvement in oil color and odor. I cannot speak for everyone. Just my self. If it means going out to dinner less here and there for the additional cost, so be it. Rich
