oils for xkr !! g/box ,diff & super charger
hi there guy's !!
new member here so excuse my post as i'm not very computer literate !!!!
I rang my nearest jaguar dealer in yarm today & asked the following !
1) engine oil how much will i need & what is the recommended oil ?
the answer was we've got it in & you can come down & buy it - no problem so far so good !!!!
now for the bad news
Stratstones had no oil to do a gearbox oil change - but it's sealed for life sir !!!
yes i do understand BUT i wish to change the oil & the filter on the gearbox !!
they could order me the filter the gaskets etc for the gearbox BUT not the oil !!!
they also NO LONGER can supply oils for the rear diff nor for the supercharger !!!
please can anyone on this forum help me please !!
I cannot believe that there is NO oil for the gearbox the rear diff or the super charger - I do not believe in all this sealed for life stuff !!!
my car has only done 62000 miles in the past 17 years but i'm sure that the oil MUST have degraded in this time !!!
as an aside i saw a guy in the USA had cut a hole in the spare wheel well to access the rear diff oil filler plug !!
It works but i cant get any oil over this side of the pond thats the same or equivalent !!
thanks in anticipation

Sherpa we need some clues to the year of your car, the gearboxes are different.
If it's the ZF there's a crowd in Bristol that does kits for the gearbox service.
Sounds like the dealer should be avoided.
Don't forget to post an intro in the new members section.

Welcome to the forum, sherpa. 'Tis the best on t'interweb.
Yes, all the oils you mention are available, and are frequently debated on here! Best to avoid the Jaguar dealer for this unless you really want to get rinsed.
If your XKR is 17 years old (99 MY?) then you have the Mercedes 722.6 transmission. Consensus here is that it's much more robust than the ZF units, but a filter and fluid change would be good. Glad to see you haven't bought into the 'sealed for death' BS
Trans. oil: Mobil ATF 134
Diff. oil: EP75W90 I believe. PITA as there's no drain plug..
Not sure for supercharger, but someone will chime in with an answer.
When you get comfortable with the forum, do a search on 'secondary tensioners'. If you're not certain that they've been replaced, then please get this done as a matter of urgency. They can and do fail, and they can and do kill engines when they let go.
Do post an intro as Norri suggests, and some more info about your car: coupe/convertible, etc.
HTH,
Mike

Stratstone have given you the official Jaguar answer to your questions as any main dealer must do.
You will probably find your local independent Jaguar specialist JagTech ( Jagtech Ltd: Jaguar trained independent repair specialists, based in Teesside ) in Stockton-on-Tees have a similar view to your own on 'sealed for life'.
