the problem is as follows: While driving my XK8 suddenly there were 2 gasps and then the engine turn off and not turn on again never.
with a scanner the result was the code P1638. The car is like death. someone could give me an explanation?

ECM or Instrument Pack problem:

P1638
CAN INST token missing

Default Action
None (Engine speed and coolant temperature data missing at Instrument Pack)

Possible Causes
CAN open circuit fault INST to ECM
CAN short circuit fault
INST failure
ECM failure

After replacing the ECM, instrument cluster and cleaning many connectors, I cleaned the small yellow connector to the right of the shifter which appeared to be heavily coated with numerous coffee spills (nice drink holder design) fixed my 1638 problem on a 2002 XJ8
