Default Please help! Dealer trying to charge me $3,400 for two new headlights.

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 2005 XKR (88k miles). Both headlights failed and one is cracked within 4 months of owning it.

Took it to my mechanic, he said two new headlights and assemblies are needed. He would be purchasing all of the parts through a Jaguar dealer. Total price will be $1,700 per headlight with installation.

Unfortunately I don't have $3k+ laying around

I found just the housing on ebay for around $250...what other parts would I need to complete the whole headlight and will the price be lower than the $1,700 per headlight??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of Jaguars!

You might want to give our good friends and forum sponsor, SNG Barratt a call. They have an on-line catalog with the assembly exploded view. Or contact one of several Jaguar recyclers for used parts. Coventry West usually has just about everything you might need.

Here is the headlight assembly.

Also check Ebay, several headlight assemblies listed for around $400.

You can buy just the lens for these lamps for around $250. Or we supply the complete thing for $1100 per (this assuming you have Xenon pack)..

Give me a shout with your VIN number if you would like further info/prices.

Plenty of wreckers, especially in the UK. Price plus shipping will be way less than buying new. Try ebay.co.uk or google for uk jaguar used parts.

The sucky thing about our year 2003-2006 is that wreckers are very limited...some parts from 2003-2004 will fit but a lot of them are specific to 2005-2006 so at the end of the day i ended up buying new dealer parts.

However, with that being said....disassembling the headlight units are actually quite simply...just needs patience and don't force anything out... I am a novice mechanic and I did the job before myself on 1 headlight (cracked) and took me 2 1/2 hr doing it slowly constantly paused and look thru everything make sure nothing got caught up ...I was so proud of myself when the job was done...saved me $300 of labor.

with patience & persistence you can usually find what you need by using this wonderful & free tool. it's self explanatory. sometimes you can get different & desired results with playing around just a bit with exact parameters in the 'Enter search here' box so keep that in mind.

in the 'In' box, drop the menu down and click on 'auto parts' and then start going through each state, and see what pops up. remember, try different combos in wording, like: 2005 XKR headlights or 2005 XKR PARTS OR 2005 XKR SALVAGE, ETC. then start contacting results and you will most likely find them. GOOD LUCK!

Search Craigslist by state and More.

I will just chime in that the cost for headlights for modern cars these days is absolutely ridiculous. For many models, perhaps the majority, they are unique to that model. While I certainly understand that my old Corvette is not as safe or as fast or as comfortable as modern cars, the typical replacement parts to keep it running reliably are 1/10th to 1/100th the cost of modern cars. In these days of silly conspiracy theories, current maintenance and parts costs sure do seem to qualify as genuine conspiracy on the part of auto companies and not just something we can blame gov't regulations for. Sorry for the side rant, but just feel for you.

Here is mu theory: People typically do not pay (directly) for front/rear bumpers, headlights and taillights. Insurance companies do, on people's behalf, after an accident. They have to replace the broken parts with original parts per their policy with the insured. Therefore, there is zero market pressure for manufacturers to lower these prices.
