Default Please help, XK8 Won't Start

Hi everyone,

I just bought an '03 XK8 Convertible. The car only has 2,700 miles and has been sitting for the last 4 years. I replaced the battery and all the electronics seem to be working as they should however the car won't start. The engine will not crank at all, there is no click from the starter relay. It seems like there is still a starter kill enabled on the vehicle anti-theft system.

I read through the manual and haven't been able to fix the problem. Is there a procedure which needs to be followed immediately after disconnecting and re-connecting the battery to completely disable the anti-thet system? One thing I didn't do was re-program the windows after installing the battery, could this cause the anti-theft system to remain armed?

When I bought the car I only got one key, its a black headed one with a green Jaguar emblem. Is this the correct key to get the car to run? Also the previous owner lost the keyless entry remotes. I've ordered a new one but will not get it for a few days.Could this be part of the problem.

Please give me any ideas or suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong. I really don't want to have to take this car to the dealer. Thanks,

Jason

that key may never have been programmed to the car and only cut, and or the car anti theft system needs to immobilized. get a couple keys and remote now and have the dealer program them all at once and gp through immobilization setup. I do this for 1 hr labor total since the equipment is allready hooked up, dont let them BS you, its a couple more buttons to push on IDS not some big ellaborate proceedure. If you pay for programming a key now, youll pay for that later, so get spares now with remote, the only 1 charge to do them all now

this is how to check to see if its a security failure ie key dead or not programmed . roll down one window.. and lock the car with remote or key once armed.. stick your arm thru the window and try to start the car.. if the security disarms itself .. then the security system and keys are good. and that something else is causing it not to start ie starter or power stud..
if it doesnt disarm itself and the security alarm goes off.. then there is a failure ie key, excitor coil, ktm failure

Thanks for the help guys,

I'll give that a shot and see what happens. Are there any places I can get replacement keys to fit the car cheaper than at the dealer?

Update, I tried the test using the key with the anti theft system armed. The car would not start and the alarm went off. It looks like the key is the problem. After inspecting the key further I think that the chip inside might just be broken. If you shake the key you can hear something rattling around inside where the chip is located.

I went to the dealer today and they told me the following:
1. You have to cut and program at least two keys for the security system to work. They quoted about $118 labor and somewhere around $75 per key.

2. They need me to tow the car in to get the keys programmed to the car.

Can someone please verify that these two things are true? I don't mind making two keys but I'd prefer not to tow the car in if I don't have to. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Greetings,

Just in case BRUTAL, Real_Tech or jag_genius are not around and you're hung up for an answer...

The cut key has to be programmed, so the car and the key and the WDS or IDS used to perform the programming have to all be at the same party. In the interest of helping out my brothers in arms, I guess you could slip a Dealer Tech a couple hundred to swing by your house with his laptop after work. To my knowledge, the tow truck driver is the only other guy who can help.

theres a way around the 2 key thing which is true, you buy 1 key have it programmed and when it asks for the second key. You wrap aluminum foil around it to shield the chip from detection but you use this 1 in the ignition switch to turn while holding another key next to it, either from the car in the next stall. or any jag key they have will work, even an uncut one. works every time and it wont deleted or mess with the programming of the other key or car. We do it all the time, maybe they dont know how to do this, its not rocket science though

And it sounds like a decent price for the new keys and to get them programmed. I've seen higher than that. How far is your dealer away from you again?

Thanks for the replies guys,

Well, I could use two good keys anyways and the price isn't too bad. I just wanted to make sure they are being honest with me. Looks like its time to call a flatbed. On the plus side the dealer isn't too far, only about 15 miles away.
