Smile Preventative Transmission Work

I have been reading all the posts on the transmisson that is in my 2000 XK8. Since I really like this car and with 45K miles I seem to be keeping things under control. Especially since we drive it very conservatively. (In this part of the country you don't want deer antlers for a hood ornament). And I just want to ask for the opinion of all you experts as to what I should do in regards to the transmission to get the maximum life and to reduce the risk of major expense. I do plan to service the transmisson at 50K miles. But should I consider at around that time having the transmission removed and upgrade the parts that are prone to failure such as the A drum?

I sure would like the opinion of all you experts.

Default Fluid treatment

I have the same question. My car shifts perfectly and no sign of any issues. However, in reading other posts it appears that it is just a matter of time before I begin to see the beginning of the end for my trans. I'm sure the purists on this blog would not likely ever support the use of fluid additives, but I have used them in many other vehicles. Never had a problem. Had great success with Lucas trans additive. In fact it has actually revived transmissions for me that were on their last legs from worn seals. Nothing it can do for broken parts (bucket?) though. Adding it may extend the life of your trans? Or will it do more harm than good to a Jaguar trans?

In my opinion, there's little purpose in taking apart a transmission that's working perfectly.

Reading the forums teaches one to pay attention to their cars...that's good...but it can also cause a kind of mechanical paranoia that sometimes causes people to dismantle working equipment for fear that it MIGHT break at some point.

My advice...just my two cents...pay attention to your trans fluid life and level, listen for unusual sounds, and enjoy your Jag. When your transmission gets tired and wants some attention, it will let you know.

I agree with The Coupe. Your preventative measure is exactly the same process and cost as repairing it if it fails. You may avoid being stranded one day, but otherwise you are no farther ahead.

Highly doubtful there's anything you can do to prevent 'A' drum failure, at least not chemically. If your SOP is long drives in the middle of nowhere you might consider an enhanced replacement part, otherwise bear in mind you could also go 100,000 miles or more without incident. It's just luck of the draw.

In this case, there are two courses, either doing it proactively, or react when something happens. My concern would be if there would be more damage and cost if the a-drum breaks apart, causing more than just one 'component' needing replaced.

I'm more proactive, If I had the budget for it, I'd schedule to be done, maybe not next week, but perhaps over the next vacation where you wont' need the car...something like that.
