Proper wheel and tire combination
I have a 1997 Jaguar XK8 that needs new tires. does anyone know the original brand? can anyone suggest a good and reasonably priced tire? and, is it a good or a bad idea to increase the size of the wheel in order to get a lower profile tire?
any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

@rogperez,
That's a real tough question. Bit like asking what is the best flavour ice cream. Everyone will have their own opinions depending on driving styles, distances travelled and even the environment the car is in. Your budget is also a consideration.
You didn't mention what rims you currently have but you can always put bigger rims on, and the later signature XK8 editions had some wonderful Jaguar larger dia rims (check out this Forum's new Marketplace where I see some for sale), but generally tyre prices go up for low profile tyres. I have considered Continentals and Bridgestones (harder wearing tyres) but the tyre road noise in the cabin is generally more noticable. Cost is part of the argument, and I'm always looking for bargains ie 4 tyres for the price of 3.
People will argue with me for my set up. I've always used Pirellis Zeros/N2 on my sports/GT cars here in Bahrain as it's really hot (50degC/122degF in the summer) so the Pirellis give great grip, but they wear quickly. So I put 245/45/R17 on all 4 corners (purists would debate that as it should be 245/50/R17) but I rotate these front/back at the year mark. Due to the extreme environment here tyres last only 3 years max, regardless of tread use, as the rubber hardens badly due to the heat. Looks like you're in Californa, USA, so it's comparable.
Purists would note that the XK8 tyres should be different front and back for R18 rims, but if you're that picky for the stance of your car, you may want to look at changing the packers/spacers on the suspension springs.
