Q: XK8 rear carrier bearings?
Just doing some routine service and checking things on the car. I noticed significant play in the lower rear axle carrier bearings (CAC 4610) only on the left side. I see that they are cone type bearings, and look to be easy to replace. The question is how to properly set the clearance. On the old Jags, we used shims. I see no shim offered; perhaps none needed?? I plan on replacing the left side pair. Just trying to get ahead of things before I get it apart. What's the recommended technique?

The end float is 0.076 mm or 0.003 ins. You mearsure with dry bearings in the carrier hub before reassembly with grease, with a dial indicator. Technically you are meant to measure with the largest shim available and select the apprpriate sized shim to get the required end float. I did mine with the existing shims and it came out within spec. However you will still feel a little play at 12-6 on the wheel. Stevinson Jaguar in Denver informed me this was normal. Might want to check the fulcrum pin bearings too while you have the hub carrier out as well. Not a difficult job if you take your time, getting the damned parking brake shoes is a PITA though until you figure it out. You dont have to completly remove the half shaft or the backplates. You will need a torque wrench that will give you 220 ft lbs for the axel nut. Use plenty of grease, a bearing press is nice but not necessary. I did both sides rear over a weekend.

Ordered the bearings, as well as upper strut mounts, from Gaudin tonight online. The bearings were less than half what my local dealer wanted, using their "graduated pricing index". The strut mounts were about $100 less each from Gaudin. Incredible. Will get them installed as soon as they arrive. Thanks for the info!
