At the time when I ordered my Welsh Enterprises poly mounts, they were considered to be I believe the best aftermarket alternatives, but they only lasted about 13,000 miles before needing replacement.

Baxtor, out of curiosity what is the reason that even fairly new replacements seem to fail? Just poor quality rubber, or perhaps some other reason?
Archery foam is used, it is a skinning foam type polyurethane and simply not up to the task.
The other problem is the damper mount donuts that are within your top mount are 70mm in diameter sitting in a 90mm housing with nothing more than a pressed Ridge to keep everything centred. They regularly move almost as soon as fitted. This movement starts the ball rolling to total failure.
The upgrade myself and Wayne developed uses damper mount bushes which fill the cavity eliminating any chance of lateral movement, the polyurethane used is also of the non foam type.

Any idea why some top mounts have exposed bolts, some have bolt covers, and some have what looks like electrical connectors running from the top?

Assuming this is a model year or 4.0 vs 4.2 quirk, but I know these experts will set me straight.

Electrical plug indicates CATS suspension (adaptive dampers) damper caps and stud nut caps were fitted to some cars, mostly early on in production then dropped, penny-pinching probably.
Reproductions of these are available.

Default New returning member. Az 2002 xk8.

I had issues with my 02 xk8 strut mounts aswell. After spending too much money and time on parts that fail way too fast. I ordered some 2 part urethane and fabricated my own. They are great. A little too stiff. But doing the job. And I know that all I have to do is order a little softer urethane and then I will have the best ones available. I was so unimpressed with the 150 ish dollar mounts that I bought. They just had a small amount of cushion inside. Very poorly made.
