Default Shock mounts

Took the 2006 XK8 to our shop to have them do a through check out. They said it needed shock mounts front/rear and front bushings. They quoted $900. I think that's crazy. What do you guys think?
Thanks.

It depends on exactly which bushings are included in the job. For that price I am guessing that it only includes the upper control arm bushings.

Just parts alone if you were to buy them would be about $350. Figuring in their markup an parts and then 4-5 hours labor (plus alignment) $900 seems about right for just upper shock mounts and upper control arm bushings.

It would help to include model year and mileage when you ask questions like this. Pic looks like an 05 or 06, right?

Yes it's a 2006. Thanks for your opinion.

Just did the front shock mounts/springs. If these are Jag parts, seems extremely inexpensive. If not, about $150 for the upper mounts front. Rear, maybe more, maybe less depending on what is happening with the rear . Bushings, depending on what they intend on using, ~$300 at Rimmer bros, maybe less if others. Leaving $300 or less labor. So, seems quantitatively reasonable based on what I just did, depending on what is actually put on the car. Obviously, cheaper if you do it yourself, and cheaper if you find cheaper parts.

Also, depends on what ride you'd like.

Thanks. I want poly if anything. I'm 67 so there's no chance of me doing it. Our shop in Orlando has been very good to us so I was surprised when they said $900. It's only around $450 in parts so $450 labor seemed steep.

Default Cost of parts

Well,

Here’s a few parts costs (ex. Labour) - OEM apart from the powerflex bushes.

Powerflex bushes (front) GBP205
Front lower shock Bush GBP 26.5
Front Spring mounts GBP 111.90
Front Shock Gaiters GBP71.8
Front Spring Assisters GBP 25.9
Rear spring isolators GBP34.46
Rear Spring pan GBP73.72
Rear Seat pigtail GBP35.64
Rear Packers GBP9.5

Some items above are optional, and one of those “while you’re in there just do it” decisions. So your quote including labour doesn’t look too bad.

Very DIY-able although I did my rears and front about a month apart, as my car was a daily driver. But you’ll definitely need a professional wheel alignment at a garage.

Frankly, $450 in labor doesn't seem particularly high to me, depending on what they are doing, and assuming 4-5 hours in line with rothwell above. This would be really cheap in my previous experience with Jag and Porsche dealer shop rates.

Bill, 67, you mean I could have stopped doing this on mine and others 12 years ago, Darn.
If you don't have a time limit, it's not a bad job on the front, the rear is a bit painful.

The price seems quite reasonable to me. Most good shops around here charge close to $100/hour. I did my own front ones over the winter ( I'm 65 and arthritic with a prosthetic hp ). I'm SLOW but I would estimate that in my prime it would have taken 2-3 hours for me to do the shock mounts alone, that does not count bushings or anything at the rear............................so $900 seems OK

No can do, have five collector cars of my own. Finishing up a Spit6 (Spitfire and GT6) and having a ball. Join the crowd on here and get your hands dirty.

I used Welsh mounts, purple powerflex bushes for the upper and lower control arms and new springs and new shocks and the total came to about $1200, you can do most of the work yourself using the videos from the forum and you tube. I had to get my local shop to swap out the lower control arm bushings as mine simply wouldn't move. The upper mounts aren't expensive, but I would go with the polyurethane over the foam. $900 seems a bit expensive for just swapping out the mounts !

If it includes all the bushings as well as fitting then it isn't a bad price, I would check the ride height before and after and also do the shocks. If it is for all the bushings front and rear then its a good price!

Slightly off topic, but my curiosity demands a photo! 😏

Wayne's Spit6 is indeed a true work of art. I look forward to taking the maiden ride in it with him later this autumn....
