I read in another thread that the last three digits of the VIN have the production number, but with production years in the 1,000's, how do they differentiate 026 from 1026, for example?

It is the last 6 digits, which is a letter or a number followed by 5 numbers.

 

That makes sense for my '97, with the last five 02006, then meaning the 2006th on a production year of 4187, but not on my '05, which as the last five 42880, for that production year (04) only 1075 were made. Unless the last five digits are is the total run of XK8+XKR in both coupe and convertible versions, but then the total for the year was 4,413, so where does the 42880 fit in? Thanks for the help!

 

1996-approx. 1999 the numbers ran 0xxxxx. Approx. 2000-2006 the rumbers ran Axxxxx. Add the last of each series together and you get the total number of XK8/Rs built.
