Default Rattling dashboard

Hi,

I've got an annoying rattle on my dashboard that I've been meaning to fix for a while. It seems the far front left ( on a RHD, by the windscreen ) has become detached, causing it to make an annoying rattle when driving.

I originally thought it was rattling vents, but I don't think it's that anymore. I *think* it might have been caused by SWMBO moving the seat forward while it was folded down, pushing the headrest against the front of the dash.

Any ideas how I can fix this? It's not visibly broken, but you can push it down on that side ( but not the right hand side ).

Before you start taking things apart, try stuffing a piece of cloth between the front of the defroster vent and the windshield to see if it stops. Yours may be suffering a different problem than mine was, but it's worth a try. I put a folded strip of felt in mine and haven't heard it since.

Using a putty knife, gently pry the dash speaker grills up and tighten the torx screws under them. Also the small center cap for the center screw.

Try Paul's advise first, it's what was rattling on mine.

Found the lid from a plastic bottle under the bonnet when I investigated a similar rattle on my XKR. The lid was caught in the leaf guard, but the rattle seemed to be coming from under the dashboard.

Best wishes, Colin

Default front window defrost vents rattle too

I found my front defrost vents at base of windshield were source of my rattles. Following advice of others, had a rubber tube stuffed there and that fixed it although the tube requires re-tucking every 3 months. After that, as solid as a Lexus LS sedan!

This is how you fix the vent rattle if you wish to take it on.

My new to me 2002 XK8 had the same issue..a little bit of black (my interior color) rubber tubing stuffed up front fixed it.

Being lazy, I was going to try to tighten the screw as the first thing, but it seems I haven't got the correct bit.

I did notice however there was a wire running under one of the vents, which was stuck down by a ( now completely unsticky ) bit of electrical tape, so I'm wondering if that's been rattling around.

I slapped some sliicone on it and put the vents back on, so I'll see how I get on for a few days. If it's still rattling, I'll get hold of the proper screwdriver bit and work through the rest of the suggestions afterwards.

Thanks chaps.

It's been a while now with no rattling, so it seems that sticking that wire down with silicone has fixed it.
