Reach motor

Reach motor
I have read of a fix or two for the steering wheel up/down motor, but have not found any fix for the steering wheel reach other than replace the steering column. (Sounds extremely expensive)
Problem:
Power reach not working in my XK, I can hear a motor whirring after I turn off engine and steering wheel stops in raised position. In fact, I have heard the motor turning when returning to the vehicle. (Has drained the battery while I have been away for a few days!) I have checked the little door in ignition opening and it is closing ok after removing key.
Does anyone have something to point me in the right direction please?
Thank you

I don't mean to hijack the thread but at least the question is related to the steering column positioning. I have found that the steering wheel does not quite set itself to the correct up/down memory position upon putting the key in and starting the car. It consistently seems adjust to a position that is maybe 1/8" to 1/4" lower than where the memory position is set. If I hit the memory button on the door the steering wheel moves up to the correct position.
Any idea as to what is going on? Dirty contacts somewhere?
Thanks,
Doug

Mine does the same thing, though it isn't quite annoying enough just yet that I have tackled fixing it.
There is a discussion and how-to here:

Charlie--same here in terms of not high enough on the annoyance index. But much more annoying is the random quirks with the memory function in general. There are occasional times when hitting the recall memory position button when things like the seat bottom and seat back will move to an absolutely ridiculous position that is nothing like where I set them.

Can't say I've ever had that happen.
Are you starting far from the memory position and it stops somewhere along the way? Or are you saying that pressing the button will cause the seat/wheel to move AWAY from the position you intend.
If it moves toward but doesn't get there, I would think the switch might the culprit. Sometimes I need to push the button twice to get everything completely into place, so I figure the contacts are a little dirty.
If it moves off into la la land away from the position you memorized that seems like it might be the module, or the position sensor on the thing that is moving. I suppose one other possibility might be voltage supply. A bad battery can cause strange electrical behavior but a bad connection to the door module could do something similar for that particular module.
I always wondered why the door module reported the input voltage to Autoenginuity. Maybe the engineers knew it was sensitive to such things and gave a way to check.
If you have access to IDS or Autoenginuity you can read fault codes from those modules and watch some of the current levels for the motors to help debug.
