Default remote control

Hi all
I started to have intermittent problems with my remote control and now it's packed up altogether. I've replaced the battery on the car and the remote fob battery, and cleaned the fob [ the remote has worked sometimes since doing this ]
I 've tried the other remote but that won't work either.
Any ideas what to try next?
Regards
Keith

You could try reprogramming the remote that doesn't work at all. If the other remote works sometimes after cleaning I'd take it apart and clean it some more.

Remember you need to reprogram all remotes at the same time.

Do the four remote buttons each have a definite click when pressed? I recently had to have the microswitches replaced in one of mine because the 'lock' and 'unlock' were intermittent.

There aren't any micro-switches in the early XK8/R remotes , just carbon impregnated rubber buttons that make contact with a circuit board when pressed ,

Nik,

Of course, you're right. My earliest XK8 was a 2001 and I'd forgotten the original ones had those different and even more troublesome remotes.

Hi guys
My remote does have micro-switches,its a 2003,but that isn't the problem as I've tested the fobs signal. The remote would work one day then pack up the next but it seemed to pack up completely when I used the key in the door to open the hood, could that just be coincedence?
Where is the sensor receiver on the car, and could that be the problem?

Just out of interest, how do you test the signal?

Keith,

On the Coupe the receiver pickup connector is top centre on the heated rear screen. Don't know where it is on the Convertible. If it happens to be in the same place, the continuous flexing from lowering and raising the roof could be causing a problem with the lead.

To summarise, you have a 2003 Convertible with two remotes. One of the remotes doesn't work at all and the other is intermittent. You've cleaned one or both of the remotes and replaced the batteries. It's important to add whether both remotes have ever worked properly since you got the car?

The remote buttons must not be pressed whilst changing batteries or the code can be lost. Before looking for anything more complicated, it may be worth reprogramming both remotes to eliminate the possibility of code loss whilst cleaning etc.

Thanks for your replies guys.
Graham,I dont think I pressed any buttons whilst cleaning but I think I will try a re-program next and go from there.
Frog, I work with some "electrical boffins" and they rigged up some weird machine that you could see the radio frequency line change when the remote buttons were pressed.
