Default Remote key fob issues. What's up?

When I bought my 02 XK8 it came with only 1 key and a fob. The fob didn't work so I put in a new battery and still nothing. Before I gave up on it, I opened it and cleaned the tabs and button connections with denatured alcohol and actually was able to get the boot button and headlight on button to work. Still no door locking or unlocking. I cleaned it again but nothing. I must add that the inside was disgusting, dirt, oil and something sticky that when I cleaned it came of totally black. The bottom buttons were not as filthy.
Is there any way I can test to see if it is the fob or worse, the door electronics.
I had an older XJ and the same thing but it would open the passenger door but not the drivers and it did end up being the drivers door electronics to the tune of 600 repair. I've heard both doors rarely go out together. True or not??
I have ordered an new fob with the correct numbers so hopefully it's my old fob.
Ay advice??

Take it to Advance Auto and try the door lock and unlock buttons on their remote tester.

BTW, did you see my PM on this subject?

Ha ha, I actually just saw it after I posted thread! I'm not getting pm notifications consistently. I need to check my settings.
Btw, where are you located? I seem to remember your not too far from NC. I'm really interested in the remote open. Thought if not too far, possibly, once my issue is resolved, I could make a trip and get some assistance installing!!

I am in Arlington VA, so we can arrange some Saturday or Sunday if you want to come up for an installation. It should take under 2 hours to do.

That's a deal! Let me sort out this issue and I'll let you know. Just hope it's not the door itself.
