Default Remote Key Kaput

One of my wireless remote keys just stopped working. The car doesn't respond to it. Took it to Batteries Plus to replace the battery. Still did not work. On their tester it looked like pressing the door unlock button stayed "pressed" even when your finger was removed. They took the remote apart and it looked like the things on the electrical board that your fingers push are have a little corrosion Probably the reason it doesn't work. I then went to the dealer. They want over $300 for the remote. And over $100 to program it. Probably around $500 total. Crazy. The Battery Plus folks looked it up in their system. One of their suppliers has a remote with the physical key integral with it. Not original. I declined because of that. Didn't ask how much $. I will.

1. Any suggestions re: how to try to get the corrosion off and make my key work?

2. Failing that, any suggestions regarding how to get a replacement and get it programmed for less than $500? If the Battery Plus folks come back with a reasonable price I will probably let them do it and use it as my spare.

Thank you,

Jack

Hi - whilst looking for a remote for my 2000 model XK8 I came across these cheapo remotes apparently compatible with LJE 2610 -BB or BC.
NEW REPLACEMENT 4 BUTTON REMOTE ALARM KEY FOB for JAGUAR XJ, XK models+ | eBay
They are not original but maybe useful as a backup.
If you want to gamble on one working then check that one of the above numbers are correct then ask for a 315Mhz unit which I think is the correct frequency for the US.
Reprogramming the vehicle to accept the remote seems to be well documented easy DIY procedure.

No shortage of used originals on eBay - e.g. here.

Bob, Wayne,

These are great suggestions. I will try Gus' cleaning method today. If that works... case closed. If not I'll try one of the $35 remotes from Ebay. Worth a shot. Better than the $500 dealer solution.

Thank you!!!

Cleaning the remote with rubbing alcohol did not work. It became pretty obvious that the switches activating door opening, door closing and trunk open were pretty shot. When I pressed the switch to turn on the lights, which I never use, you could feel a distinct click for activation. The other switches which I use all the time did not do that. So...

I ordered a used remote from Ebay as suggested. I will have to figure out how to program the remote. I think there are instructions somewhere. If anyone knows where they are, could you please point me in the right direction.

Thank you,

Jack

Funnily enough it's in the "How To" section https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...graming-10496/

You could also consider an "upgrade" https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...light=flip+fob

Post #2 in this string says to pull the turn signal to flash while you are turning the key to position one. Then pull the turn signal a few more times, etc.

Post #10 says nothing about the turn signal lever. Says to turn the key from position 1 to position 2 a few times etc. Anyone know which (or both) work?

I think I have seen a few other posts similar to Post #2.

The remote I bought from Ebay is on its way to me. Hope I don't screw up the one remote I have that works. Hey, what could go wrong?

Thanks,

Jack

Jack, What they don't say is "hold your left ear with your right hand and cross your big toe on the right foot", while you are pulling up on the signal switch.
Who thinks this stuff up, Oh,, it works as I did mine off Ebay a couple of years ago.

Yeah, the word cockamamie seems to describe this process.

I took MediaBobNY's suggestion and bought one from Ebay. The used remote cost about $35. Followed the instructions in your link to program it when it arrived.

Worked like a champ.

The dealer wanted around $350 for the remote. About $150 to program it. Took about one minute for me to program it. What a ripoff.

So $500 to the dealer, or $35. Do the math.

Thank you very much!!!
