Took fob and car to a locksmith who programs remotes for cars. He said fob is good, something wrong with car, as he hooked up some kind of meter to the car.

Is there a way to reset the receiver in the car?

(As a side note, I think this happened around the time I was doing some electrical work around the house and caused the garage door opener breaker to flip. Don't know if this could of caused it. I've never been able to program this car's garage opener button anyway, even tho all our other cars work.)

 

The Remote could be good (emitting a signal) but not paired to the vehicle.

Nope, no good. Tried the other method turning from position 2 to 1 several times. No good. Thinking about putting a lighted rag in the fuel nozzle

Yes, I did. Thanks. Don't know what else to do. I did get a "chirp" from the car while performing the procedure from the posted TSB, which is switching key from position 2 to 1 five/six times, but remote still not working.

Think I need to have the remote re-programmed as I think "receiver" in the car is working.

 

The chirp is the confirmation it's going into 'learning mode'.

If you only have one remote, press any button on it five times and you should get a second chirp confirming it's programmed.

Review the procedure again...what you are describing is not the correct procedure.

 

I did it from aux to on, and on to aux with no luck, even tho I got a chirp from doing it, as you said, the wrong way!

I did not, however, press the remote five times as Graham suggested. That was not in the posted TSB. I will try it.

BTW, the other procedure posted, using the "flash to pass" stick on the steering column elicited no chirp on my vehicle.

Tried that, got chirp, but no readout on dashboard, nor did it program the remote. I even tried clicking my heels three times repeating "There's no place home" three times!

 

There's nothing shows on the dashboard during programing. Only indications are the chirp and the red light flashing on the gearshift.

Ok, then I'm screwed. Everybody in SoCal wants over $300 for a new fob and it looks like the fob is swimming with the fishes.

On the bright side, a friend just bought a 2014 California Ferrari and the oil change alone is $1000.

 

You can buy the fobs on eBay but it still sounds like you aren't following the instructions. You have to follow them exactly or it doesn't work. This isn't a close is good enough thing.

Check to make sure you get one with the same part number series on the back of the case as the one you have already.

For example, my 2001 XK8 used LJE2610BB but my 2005 used LJE2610BC and, although they looked identical, they were NOT interchangeable.

I agree and hope you are right. This is the procedure I'm trying:

"1. Pull and hold headlight flasher back while performing step 2.

2. Turn ignition key to position 1 (DO not "start" the engine, only turn the key to position 1).

3. Now pull the headlight flasher and flash the headlights 4 times.

4. Alarm will enter programming mode. This will be confirmed by "beeps" from the alarm and flashing led on gearshift.

6. Program each transmitter (up to 5) by pressing the lock or unlock button on each transmitter once.

7. The alarm will "honk" when you press the transmitter button.

8. The alarm must honk 5 times to complete the programming. Therefore, if you are only programming one transmitter
you should operate the transmitter 5 times.

9. If you are programming two transmitters you will operate one transmitter twice, and three times on the other."

I did not get the beep until I turned the key back to the off or "0" position. I tried leaving key in the 1 position with no chirp.
I did not get a "honk" when I tried #7.
I tried #8, pressing the unlock 5 times. Nothing. Do I need to do the whole procedure 5 times, or just press the button 5 times.?

 

It can take several attempts to get the timing right on pulling the headlight flasher.

Too fast and it doesn't work, too slow and it doesn't work. About the speed of the opening bar of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is about right:


The button should be pressed five times if programing only one fob, not the whole procedure repeated five times.

It's really frustrating, but there seems to be a set of distinct procedures that work for different people. I can't see a pattern, so can't say: "for 99-01 XK8 (but not XKR) etc, see thread #33324". With my vehicle, I need to have the door open for the reset to work; the alarm doesn't honk and the only feedback I get is the red light on the gear shifter/lever surround. That doesn't fit with the "official" reset procedure at all.

The links in the posts quoted in this thread start with a clear set of instructions, but end with a record of folks' experiences where they say: "I tried that and it didn't work, but I tried something slightly different which did work". That's where I started from and I found a method eventually which worked reliably for my car. Can't say it will work for everyone though. I suspect the Original Poster will need to tread a similar path.

In the meantime, I'm rooting for you. Hope you get it fixed.

Is there a way to determine if fob is bad? I'm starting to think it might be it. It's eight years old.

 

Take the fob to an Advance Auto parts...they have a free tester at the parts counter.
