Hi all!

I was trying to remove the rear trim in the trunk (to replace the trunk light micro switch) and 2 of the plastic screw rivets stripped.

I was able to pry one out fairly easily but this inner one (see pic) is proving to be a big pain to get out because it's so recessed.

Are there any established tips/best practices on doing this sort of thing?

I've considered drilling or center punching it. I tried unscrewing it while prying from behind with a plastic trim tool but that got nowhere.

BTW, I already have 4 new screw rivets coming in the mail so no worries about damaging the old ones...

 

I think I would try to pry the head up with a 90-degree pick (like you use for o-ring removal). Either you should be able to pull the center out completely or more likely bend the head up so you can grab it with needle nose vice grips.

 

What auburn2 said. Grab that sucker and rip it out with some needle nose pliers. By the way those can be purchased at most auto parts stores.

 

I was joking with a friend earlier today about my ordering the Jaguar screw rivets. With my tongue planted firmly in cheek, I said, "Yes, but imagine the intense shame I would feel if someone were to crawl into my trunk (upside-down & backwards) and exclaim "Those screw rivets are not original! Get me out of this mismatched Jaguar, instantly!"."

 

A small screwdriver and some needle-nosed pliers got it out nicely. Thanks!
