Default Seat memory and central locking problems

Hi.
Since buying my xk8, 1998 coupe around a year ago, I have had one annoying problem. When I programme in new seat settings, the chime is heard, but new positions will not be accepted. This is the same for both seats, and I have followed the handbook instructions, and also tried several of my own, like taking the key out and back in before trying the memory positions. Try as I may, and even though the process seems ok according to the handbook, the seats will not retain the new memory. My wife often drives so this gets tedious.
Secondly, recently, the car is not locking on the remote. It got quite bad, then by chance, the battery went, so I replaced it with a new one. The problem seemed to go for a short while, but has returned. I have noticed that the car wont lock for several minutes, but after a while, will do so, even from a great distance. I have checked the battery in the remote, and tried others and another remote.
One a few minutes have passed, there are no more roblems until the car is next used.
My thoughts are that a control item is overheating.
Anyone give some advice on these problems?
Thanks
Paul

Most likely, the variable resistors that sense the seat position (attached to the motors) are worn. Opening them up and applying contact cleaner might help for a little while, but the problem will recur. Motor replacements (expensive) will probably be needed for a permanent fix. This TSB might also be helpful: http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/XK8/...%20Systems.pdf

Better news on the key fobs potentially. Open them up and thoroughly clean the gold button contact areas with alcohol. Inspect under a magnifier that all black residue is gone. Also clean the conductive rubber buttons.

Hi.
I will look into the seat items when I get a chance, my wifes car is off the road atm, so the Jaguar is doing daily rounds.

I have cleaned the remotes, and bearing in mind that it will work fine, from several meters away after the car has stopped for several minutes, I doubt its the remote, as I have tried 2, cleaned them both, checked batteries etc.

As my wife uses the car, she is trying different things, and she thinks that it doesnt like the remote to be used too close to the car, so will try checking this.

If close enough, maybe I could help.

No probs Paul, hope you get it sorted.

Have you tried disconnecting the seat modules, cleaning the pins in the connectors and reconnecting. It might just work.
