Default Sensible temperature gauge

Reading some past threads it seems the XK8 temperature gauge is not sensitive enough to indicate dangerous overheating.
Does anyone make an electronic 'black box' which could take temperature sensor data from the OBDII socket?
Hopefully this would be able to detect rapid (or longer term) rate-of-change and sound an alarm!

I'm sure WhiteXKR will be along shortly to suggest an excellent alternative .....

The RealGauge from Steve is still on my to-do list.

RealGauge FAQ - TheJagWrangler

However, for the interim I use a wifi OBDII dongle with the Dash Command App on my iphone, and it works very well, since I can monitor the coolant temp realtime. For the Torque app on the Android phones, you only need a bluetooth dongle. (As far as I could gather, the Torque app is currently the best out there.)

Watching the realtime coolant temp and the guage at the same time gives you an indication of how useless the gauge really is. I would still prefer Steve's RealGauge, just because I don't need to watch my iPhone all the time!
