Default Service manuals

Hi folks.
I see many service manuals ( on CD) on E Bay that cover my 02 XKR. Any recommendations on which is the best, ie: most comprehensive and easiest for an amature mechanic to follow?

Thanks.

They are all based on JTIS which was the dealer technical documention prior to 2003 when they went on-line.

My 2005 XKR is the first car I have owned where there was not some readily available and affordable hard copy service manual from either the manufacturer or an aftermarket publisher (like Haynes or Helms). I did download the JTIS CD that is somewhere between moderately helpful and useless.

Why is it that no one publishes something more usable in hard copy form for these cars?

Like the 'idiot' gauges, full mechancial documentation is beyond the information a proper Jaguar owner needs to know.

Besides, they serve free soda and coffee in the dealer lounge.

Well I use Alldata.com and I have the JTIS CD and I find that Alldata was worth the annual fees. I do agree "JTIS CD that is somewhere between moderately helpful and useless".

I've got both too and I find alldata in the same boat as the JTIS cd. execpt alldata gives you a price for the replacement part.

After reading tons of messages here and on other sites, I'm not too sure the dealers have anymore information than we have. It appears most can't find any reason for the asc/traction messages. I've been receiving them. I was told by an independent Jag shop to shut down, wait at least 1 minute so the computer can reset. When you restart the message will be gone. Well this works for me, about once every other week.

JTIS and Alldate show nothing about this problem or how to fix it. Several people that have posted here say the same thing about the dealer's ability to find or solve the problem but they still collect your money (for doing nothing).

Have you looked into the possibility of the ABS module circuit board problem? On both of my cars xj6 & xk8 the abs / traction control light would go on when it wanted to. We could not find anything in the system that was failing. We found a TSB on my xj6 but it continued after we checked the connector. I ended up replacing both ABS Modules. I did not have this information at that time. You may need to sign into this page but it will give you a little insight on your problem. I did see a place that will rebuild your existing unit for you but I do not have it to give to you.

I am assuming that you checked all the wiring, connectors and sensors?

How hard is it to bleed the ABS unit after removing and reinstalling the lines? Do you need a break out box or a special box to exercises the motor while pushing the fluid through and the air out?

The ABS is no different from any other brake bleed.

I would suggest that you use a turkey baster to pull the old fluid out of the master cylinder reservoir and refill just to make the flush go a little faster.

Whatever you do, do not tell the wife and do not put the baster back in the kitchen. And when the wife asks about it just act deaf, dumb and blind and leave the room!

you can fix the module without removing any lines. the circuit board on the few I have seen has broken solder joints and is an easy fix.

I saw a "How To" on Jag-lovers board and the lines were free from the ABS unit, in order to get the module out. I have not looked closely at my module to figure out how to get it away from the ABS unit yet.

Question: What is the difference between ITT Super DOT 4 fluid and another company Super DOT 4 fluid (if you happen to know).

The state of the art for repair manuals is the Global Technical Reference from Jag. It costs over $250 per year, but worth it if you do your own work.
