Default Should I buy 2006 XKR? Please guide.

I am planning to buy 2006 XKR , 100,000 miles on it.
Should I be worried about anything in particular?
Can I take it to any Jaguar Dealer and get it inspected ? what kind of inspection I should ask for and how much I usually cost?

khada1982,

You're in the X150 Forum, for 2007-2014 XK/XKR models. You'll get better replies by reposting your inquiry in the X100 Forum, for 1996-2006 XK8/XKR models: click XK8 / XKR ( X100 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

If I was considering buying a Jaguar that's over 10 years old with more than 100,000 miles, I'd be worried about everything. It may look great, but you can't tell a book by it's cover. Do you have all the service records? Is it one-owner? Has it ever been in an accident or repainted? You can't rely on anything the seller tells you, and must do your own due diligence to determine if that car is worth buying and, if so, what is a fair price to pay.

Hennessy Jaguar has 3 locations in metro Atlanta. Hennessy Jaguar | Jaguar Dealer in Atlanta, GA You would be prudent to have them do a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) so you know if you're buying a can of worms or a solid used car. Ask to see their PPI Checklist form to see what their inspection covers and the type of written report they will provide. Also ask them for estimates of the cost of parts and labor for each deficiency. The PPI cost will depend on the time, usually 2 hours or less. Expect to pay around $250.00, maybe a lot less. Call them for a price quote.

As an alternative to the dealer, a competent and qualified independent Jaguar shop may be able to save you some money because their hourly labor rate is less than a dealer. One indy shop that I've used and recommend is Buckhead Imports, near the intersection of Roswell Road and Peachtree Street. BMW Jaguar Mercedes Repair & Tuning They have all the Jaguar diagnostic equipment and experienced Jaguar techs.

Welcome to the forum khada1982,

I've moved your question from X150 to X100 forum. Members here with this model will be able to help.

The usual advice is this: If you cannot do the majority of the ongoing maintenance and repairs that these cars require yourself, walk away from any of them. If you must pay someone else (dealership or indie shop) to have your car maintained and repaired, these vehicles can drain your bank account in a flash. That said, obtaining the complete service history of these cars is always the first step before deciding whether you are interested. Good luck....

Thanks guys for the valuable advise.

I will take it for PPI inspection.
Regarding the maintenance and repair, I am thinking about getting extended warranty (100k , 5 years , $3800 total, $100 deductible, from some company I found online , not Jaguar)-- Question: Are these warranty any good?

Khada, do a search [company name] customer reviews. I find that will give you the best picture. These companies require a large down payment, can argue about average cost per job, too much risk for me.

As usual, it depends on the details. The most important is if whatever repair facility you retain for the work is willing to work with that warranty. If not, then you are left paying for repairs upfront, and then seek reimbursement, and that could be an ugly place to be. If you look at TSBs for example, they typically include whatever time Jaguar pays for a fix. Some can be as low as 20 minutes. Can you remember the last time anyone ask you for a third of an hour labor for anything car-related? I am saying you could end up paying a big difference between what a shop charges you ("retail" if you will), and what a warranty company reimburses ("wholesale") after the fact.

Separately, these contracts could have lots of exclusions besides the usual wear items (brake pads, etc). There are lots of issues on an aging car that relate to such edge cases like rubber hoses, bushings, mounts, etc. that would typically not be covered. On the other hand, engine and transmission are pretty solid, so unlikely to require warranty work.

Last, quite frankly, and it is just my opinion, you might want to think hard about getting into an older, sort of complex car if you are already planning to get the car worked on by professionals. Speaking for myself, this car is only financially viable as I do most of my own work. If I had to have all the work done by others, this car's cost would rapidly increase to be on par with much newer, reliable cars. I am not saying Jaguars are worse than any older car of the same age, just that the acquisition cost is just one aspect. Obviously, your wallet, your call.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

The problem with these extended warranty is that you can't really maintain the car yourself...if something break and they know you changed oil yourself, they will try to put the blame on you and refuse to pay for the repairs....and like JON89 said if you can't maintain the car yourself, it'll drain your bank account very fast....thus far I found that these car is fairly reliable, a lot of times it'll scare you with a bunch of check engine codes which turned out to be low battery...so diagnose will be a little hard with these cars but I haven't experience any big ticket repair yet (knock on wood)

So if you plan on the extended warranty you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to pay for every maintenance as well.

I think these cars get a bad rap. I don't believe the Jaguar is any worse than ANY 2006 high-end boutique vehicle such as Mercedes or BMW. Servicing such vehicles at the dealer will always be pricey so the key thing is to find some decent reasonable independent guy. Of course if you have the time and tools and skills to do the work yourself, so much the better.

I have got three options so far :
2006 XK8, 92k miles, ~$8500 -- did not test drive the care yet
2000 XK8, 36k miles, ~$9900 -- Clean car fax, single owner, dealer maintained.
2006 XKR, 101k miles, ~14900 -- Clean car fax, dealer maintained.
What do you guys prefer?

Also, Do you guys know any Driving instructor in Atlanta who can provide me lesson on driving on tracks?

There's no way to compare and contrast these three vehicles without far more information (including full service history). That said, the first one best reflects the current value of a typical example. The other two are likely overpriced....

Looks to me like you're looking at the cheapest ones possible, those are all priced in the low end for these cars. I would pay a little more and get a really nice one

You mentioned driving on a track, if you are thinking of getting the Jag for track use forget it. These are Grand Touring car, using me on a track will be disappointing and get expensive fast.

Get a Miata for track use, cheap and one of the best track cars made.
