...reading my favorite back issue of Jaguar World, and it got me thinking about Mag availability [[i]yes, I had already cleaned behind the Ears].
There’s loads of Jag Mag publications (Jaguar World, Jaguar Driver, Classic Jaguar, Jaguar Magazine, Jaguar Memories, Jaguar Enthusiast) but can everyone get these things off the shelf? In particular, can our brothers in the USA get them? It only seems right since more X100’s went ‘over there’ than the whole rest of the world put together.
Interesting- a Jaguar World annual subscription in North America costs 10 quid more than a UK subscription - that doesn’t seem unreasonable. However, it would be nice to be able to preview before taking the plunge- so back to your original question, I’ve never seen these mags on the shelf in the USA, but to be fair, I’ve not been in a magazine shop for several years… anyone else?
It's very unusual for a UK magazine to be widely available off the shelf in the USA. The magazine industry operates on a sale-or-return basis, with many people in the supply chain taking a cut. In the UK the publisher will probably retain around 45% of the cover price on the issues sold, but unsolds are pure cost to the publisher. On overseas newstrade sales the publisher will retain more like 20% of the cover price, so it is very easy for overseas sales to run at a complete loss, hence very few UK mags are sold that way.
I had a subscription to Jaguar World as well as Octane magazine for many years. I can find both at the local Barnes and Noble bookstore as well as a couple of more Jag titles. They've got the Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin guys covered with their magazines also. Pricey but nice, and the magazines can keep the enthusiasm up during the rough patches.
My local Barnes and Noble closed down a couple of years before the pandemic. There are still two of them in San Jose. I've been there twice in the last couple of months. They have a lot of different titles available. Many of the Euro car titles are quite expensive.
