Default Spare tire reminder

Just wanted to remind everyone that our spare tires can be upwards of 20+ years old and are probably dry rotted. Don't find out the hard way like I did... I had a flat recently and changed out to the spare tire only to have it fail in less than a quarter mile. A definite bummer, especially when my tire size was 275 30 20 and no one had anything that size in stock nearby and no one had the spare tire size either. So with my car sitting on the side of the road and the nearest tire shop closing soon I decided to buy the only tire they had that was close, a 275 35 20 that seemed to sit 1"+ taller. But, it worked perfectly AND I like the larger tire size as it fills out the wheel well a little better in the rear, and I probably never would have tried a larger tire on my own. So now I have a matched set of these bigger tires in the back

I ended up buying a Kuhmo spare tire for ~$135 shipped and I put it on the rim and I should be all set - and hopefully I won't need my spare again.

That does fill the wheel wells nicely. Just remember that now your speedo will be off a tiny bit.

Thanks for the heads up on the dry-rotted spares. It's always important that those me regularly inspected and replaced when necessary.

Good reminder, thank you. Taller tires will show your speed to be slower than your actually going, so keep thst in mind.
