Special cam cover bolt?
Does anyone have the correct part number for the 'special' cam cover bolt that is used next to the cam positioning sensor? It's designed so that the bolt does not interfere with the magnetic signal. I've searched and searched and can't get the info. Even Barrett is silent on this. 1999 XK8, AJ27
JEPC has it as NCE2644AA, superseded by 'AJ810721 (Unavailable)' according to Heritage:

Welsh claims to be able to source them:

Breaker may be your best bet.

Over $1000 was spent on my '99 XK8 by a previous owner to eliminate the P1396 error. Mechanic replaced the solenoids, then replaced the plugs/wires to the solenoids, pocketed the money and gave up. It likely popped up after the chain tensioners were replaced. Neither rocker cover had the "special bolts." I've spent many hours investigating the solenoids, swapped in a new one and swapped them all around (never an error on Bank A), checked cam position sensors, oil viscosity change... with no improvement. Someone remarked that the XKR has the special bolts even though there's no VVT. That was an AH HA moment since I have an XKR. The two bolts came out easily from the supercharged engine. since they aren't captured by the washers. I had to remove the one rocker cover on XK8's B bank to extract the captured screw I had previously shortened. The special screw is almost identical to the others but lacks the locating tip and is thus a fraction of an inch shorter, with roughly the same number of threads and is also magnetic. It appears to be just another 10mm screw. So common, in fact, that I found an identical screw on the floor of my minivan. No idea where it came from. P1396 pops up in "Pending Faults" every time I take it out and CEL comes on every second trip if I hadn't cleared the code. Nothing has changed. When I drive that Jag, I park my cell phone on the console, clear the code and keep an eye on different gauges (like instant MPG, trip MPG, STFT, water temp, volts.....) displayed on MiniTorque.
The only change from swapping in the special bolts is the corrugated tubing to the rocker cover breather crumbled in my fingers and now I need to run a replacement hose from breather to throttle body. No telling what else will break when I pull the throttle body. I just replaced the Pedal Position Sensor plug a week ago for the throttle body.
