Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like the old saying: 'rode hard and put up wet'.

You are probably correct that the starter just needs to be 'bumped'. Try that or replace the starter.

Sounds like the starter pinion gear is not engaging the engine ring gear.

Hey, sorry, first post here. I have exactly the same problem. I'm not sure what you mean by "bumped". As an automatic it can't be jump started, do you just mean hit with a rubber hammer or something? If so, must be done from below, right?

Long, long ago in a far away place I kept a 3' piece of a wooden broom stick in my '56 Chevy to 'bump' the starter when the solenoid failed to throw out the starter gear. Worked then, probably will work now.

Of course, now we just replace the starter.

Before replacing the starter, load test the battery, you may not have the amps to activate the solenoid.

is it possible to test the starter on a 86 xj6 while on the car ?
