starter not engaging

After a 2000 mile road trip with no problems, I parked my 2003 XK8 in the garage, while wet. Left it untouched for several days, then went to start it up,but the started just whirred. I tried "bumping" the ignition, but no help. With my old Ford V-8, I just had to tap the starter on the exterior casing to fix, but I am not happy with that on my toy. Any ideas?
Sounds like the starter pinion gear is not engaging the engine ring gear.

Long, long ago in a far away place I kept a 3' piece of a wooden broom stick in my '56 Chevy to 'bump' the starter when the solenoid failed to throw out the starter gear. Worked then, probably will work now.
Of course, now we just replace the starter.
