Default Starting issue.

,I've owned my 2000 XK8 for a few months, but just registered it today. Here's what's happening;Drove it 30 miles today, and started it several times throughout the day. Got it home, and parked it for a few minutes then tried to start it again. All lights come on, but the starter wont engage, Not even a click. Put a voltmeter on the battery, shows about 12.8v. tried everything I could think of; seat belt on, foot on brake,...nuttin'. I'm pissed off so I'll get back on it tomorrow. Where do I start? Thanks guys...

Try jiggling the shifter and/or starting it in neutral. The park/neutral switch is the first suspect in my mind.

Default 2nd Try, two hours later.

During the previous start attempts, I had tried neutral for a start, no joy. After two beers and some chow, I was compeled to head back to the garage. Inserted key, rotate, started instantly. I'm also wondering about a possible dirty ground at the starter? I appreciate your input...

Possibly, or a sticky starter solenoid, a sticky starter relay or intermittent park-neutral switch.

Default Finding stuff...

Will the starter solenoid be mounted on the starter? Where will I find the starter relay?Do you think I might be able to squirt some electronic's cleaner into the area of the shifter in the hope of cleaning the contacts of the Park/Neutral switch? Thanks for the troubleshooting direction...

Fuse and Relay information is in the Vehicle Care Handbook. If you haven't got this or any of the other Handbooks for your vehicle, they can be downloaded in PDF format by following this link:

Maybe the same problem? I had similar problem except nothing would light up........a couple of hard resets through the past year have handled the problem. Always carry that spare wrench for the - terminal on the battery, it can be your best friend when your wife gives you THE LOOK.

Thumbs up Starter Relay

Pulled the starter relay and replaced with new. I've probably done 25 starts in two days. So far, I have not been able to duplicate the problem. Gremlins...? If it happens again, I'll replace the starter/solenoid. Thanks to you guys for the input. Bob

Default starts

No power to the starter again. R&R'd the starter after cleaning the contacts. Bench tested good, seems to be OK in the car after 15-20 starts.

Default Love this Jag,,,she's not loving me back...

No start, more often. Tried everything, including a reset. Turn the key on ,get the fast clicks from the relay, but no turns on the starter. On one of the first attempts ,the starter did begin to turn a few teeth, then quit. Nothing on the last 20 start attempts. Battery fully charged, cleaned the grounds, tightened everything. Ideas? thanks, Bob

Use this link to my no start and go down to the Power distribution and Starter and see if it provides a little help.

Bulkhead connector is under the hood; It's where the high power lead enters the engine compartment; I use it to connect my battery charger during hibernation; It's well concealed, here's athread that might help: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...nnector-92454/

And maybe attached diagram will help you find it

Default Progress

Jacked the Jag, and slid underneath. We had removed the starter back in May, cleaned the solenoid and put it back in. This time, I went under and loosened and cleaned the ground strap. I then took a drift with a small hammer and gave the starter motor a good spanking. Seems to be working good now... bought a reconditioned starter from Pep Boys ($148.) + $55 core, will put it in tomorrow. Suggestion to my Jag colleagues , keep the hammer at the ready... Thanks all, Bob
