Default Steering column telescoping doesn't work

I just purchased my 2001 Jaguar XK8 and the Steering column telescoping do not work. You can hear the motor running, but it does not move. I took it to the Jaguar Dealer and they said that the entire steering column must be replaced. $1700 for column and $1000 for labor. Has anyone ever tried to fix one. I would imagine that the gears do not match up anymore. Has anyone ever took one apart? It is not real important, but if I could fix it I would like to. Ron

Increasingly often posted issue, mine included. I think there are a number of us waiting on Rev Sam to do a video how-to. For some the repair part is a $50 item, others may have to buy the entire column. This link pretty much summarizes the problem but without enough detail to start yanking the column out.

If replacing the column was necessary to restore the telescoping, would it instead be possible to adjust the current column to a comfortable position and disable the telescoping device? Especially if this would leave the up and down adjustment working. I could live without the feature to save a couple of grand.

If the plastic gear teeth are stripped, then you should be able to manually pull and push the column in and out. If the column will not move then most likely the short cable is broken.

Default Thanks, I am not the only one

I am shocked to see that I am not the only one having this telescoping problem. I will order a new cable and follow the thread that TEST POINT gave me.... Thanks Ron

This is a great community. You'll see that there aren't too many problems out there that someone in here hasn't experienced before. Welcome.

Default Steering column doesn't work

Linda's Jag, don't feel alone. bought my '98 XK 12/06 Had the tilt down motor replaced 3months later. Since then when ever it's very cold (under 40 degrees) or very hot (over 80 degrees) the telescope and tilt work almost normal. Any other temps and the column has a mind of its own. Sometimes it won't work at all and I have to use the manuel mode.. Even then I have to ratchet it down something like 1/2 inch at a time. Jack

Jack, looks like you got the new motor, but the teeth are still causing you problems. You going to give the replacement a try yourself?

LOL! Mine is working fine! I only do videos if I absolutely have to repair something.

Speaking of which, I still need to do my lower suspension bushings. Maybe I'll work on that this weekend.

Unhappy steering column

h20boy, There's little I can do in the way of repairs now. Just finished PT and am looking at a possible knee replacement. I'm not the biggest guy around 5'10" but you have to be a little more flexible then I am working around these XK's. I'll have to live with my girls quirks for a while. Jack
