Steering wheel and tire chatter.
I have a 2001 XK8. When I am stopped I can turn the steering wheel all the way in either direction but as I approach full travel the steering wheel and the tires chatter/vibrate very rapidly then stop. It stops when I reach full throw. We thought it was a problem with the power steering pump but when we replaced it we still had the same problem. Anyone have the same issue? Any thoughts?
Thanks

Looks like in that situation, you are putting maximum load on the steering system. Check the belt for any slippage (noise, etc.). Check the steering fluid, i.e. that the pump is not running out of fluid somehow. Then check the rack. It is held in place by 2 big rubber bushings under big U clamps. Check that it stays in place at max load.
Altogether I have never been a big fan of that maneuver because of the load on the steering system. I normally try and move the car forward or backwards at least a bit when steering...

Thanks for the responses.
The tires are in great shape and I keep the pressure at the recommended inflation. The power steering pump was replaced when this first came up so the fluid levels and belt are right on. The chatter also occurs while the car is moving very slowly too!I suspect it is a problem in the rack and will pursue that next.
