Sticks in first gear

2003 Jaguar XK8. Will stay in first gear. If I get enough Speed I can put it in N and then back to D and it will shift properly most of the time but not always.

Are your brakes lights on when that happens? More than likely, your brake switch is faulty and tells the computer not to shift up...
