Well went out two hours later and tried to start car to go for a ride (79 degrees no wind, nice riding weather) after I had closed every up and locked it up, car will not start so uncover ECM and TCM unplug ECM unhook battery and resistance is still 120 ohms each way, hook car back up (approx. 15 min and car starts) so I shut it off and lock it up to try again later. unhooked battery first before unplugging ECM

Problems remain, have had several "no start" conditions and have not been able to measure anything but 120 and 123 ohms in both directions from the ECM outward. Have been monitoring the fault indications on Autoenginuity ScanTool and it was showing interment can message faults at the instrument cluster so removed same and took it apart looking for problems that might be seen and cleaned the cable contacts in and out of the board and reinstalled unit back in car , so will see what happens next.

I am not a big fan of throwing parts at a problem, but there are usually a few used XK8 instrument clusters under $100 on ebay. If you do get one, a unit from a 2000-2002 non-supercharged XK8 should be plug and play. Make sure it has the yellow connector on the right, and not two black connectors.

since cleaning and re seating all connectors on the instrument panel I have been able to restart 10 or 12 times and drive the car around some during this time. Who knows maybe.

Well put 75 miles on the baby today and stopped and started it 10 times with no trouble, but only time will tell ( watched can activity on Tm, Abs, and ICm and saw no errors today)
Wish to think all for the help, it sure made a difference as the instrument cluster was the last place I would have looked (it had the modified backing in the unit also)

The best thing you can do for this car is to clean the plugs as you go. One thing for sure XK8's do not like to sit idle! I wish you luck!

Well after a summer off in the motor home I came home and have used the car daily for past 3 weeks and not a trouble one, prior to extended trip ,tried going around and tightening all ground connections I could find and the ecm has not reported a theft in about over 4 weeks of driving. Fingers are crossed for a while yet.

Mine did the same thing, but only in rainy weather. I replaced the battery, it was the factory one, and no problem since.

Thanks for the update and to all that helped with the troubleshooting. What a great forum, I would have never bought my car if I hadn't found this place first.

This is an old thread, but I want to second the comment above: I was a reader of this forum while shopping for a used XK8; without the keen knowledge of the members within, I likely would not have pulled the trigger. The extensive knowledge shared here gives one the confidence to take the Jaguar leap and drive the car of our dreams.

Many thanks to the helpful members of Jaguar Forums!
