Default Strange central locking problem!

Hi all
After some advice. Recently bought a '98 XK8, and the remote for the central locking wasn't working. Presuming it was the batteries, I fitted a new set and then went about programming the unit as instructed on the internet.

Obviously, the sequence is: headlight flasher on, ignition to first position, flash lights four more times then press all the buttons on the remote. Having done that, the security light on the J gate flashed to confirm it had had the signal.

However, the doors still don't lock/unlock, the boot doesn't open BUT the headlights do come on when pressed!

Any ideas what's causing this, chaps? The little 'flap' in the ignition barrel is working absolutely fine, and when the car is locked with the key, it arms the alarm etc... as I find out nearly every time I open the car and forget to put the key in the ignition straight away!

Cheers
Richard

Richard,
Might be worth cleaning the remote fob - perhaps the fact that the headlight button is the only one that works is because it's the only one that's never been used before !!
Useful guide here :

Cheers,
David.

Sometimes the gold contact areas on the circuit board need to be cleaned a bit more aggressively than implied in the pdf. Looks at them with a magnifier...there should be absolutely no black residue between the gold spirals. Also clean the black rubber contact areas thoroughly.
